GUNS IN THE NEWS--March 15, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. 9 Dead, 10 Coffins Found in Fresno Home
"FRESNO, Calif. - A man suspected of murdering nine of his family members apparently was involved in polygamy and incest, fathering two of the victims with his own daughters, police said Saturday.
The bodies of six females and three males, ages 1 to 24, were found tangled in the back room of in Marcus Wesson's home Friday. Fresno's largest mass murder ever quadrupled its homicides for the year in a single night and disturbed officers so much that some immediately needed counseling.
Wesson, 57, has fathered children with at least four women, two of whom are his own daughters, said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.
A neighbor, Chris Tognazzini, said he heard two gunshots moments before police arrived."

3. They interviewed Fresno Chief
On "Today." Asking if they were shot while the police were outside. Blame the PD, not the criminal. Typical.

4. 9 Siblings Dead, Son Says He Hopes Father Isn't Guilty
"The first two women, interviewed later by the police, said they had left their children in Mr. Wesson's care, but returned to the house Friday to take them back and had been unsuccessful, officials said.
Mr. Wesson, 57, initially told the officers that he would release the children, but then ran into a bedroom and locked the door. After the women said Mr. Wesson might have a gun, police negotiators and SWAT officers were called in. After an hourlong standoff, he surrendered."

21. At least 6 died of gunshot wounds in Fresno slayings
"FRESNO, Calif. -- A makeshift memorial of stuffed animals, balloons and flowers grew on the sidewalk in front of a home where a man is accused of killing nine of his family members, some that police said may have been the product of incest with his own daughters.
Autopsies on six of the victims showed each died of at least one gunshot wound, Patricia Bresett, assistant to the Fresno county coroner, said Monday. She said the other autopsies were expected to be completed later in the day.
It is the largest mass killing ever in Fresno, a city of 440,000 people about 190 miles southeast of San Francisco.
Marcus Wesson, 57, emerged blood-covered from his home Friday night after police were called there because of a child custody dispute. In a back room, police found a tangle of bodies and clothing, a sight so gruesome it reduced some veteran officers to tears."

26. Yup: "Fresno Family Shot, With No Sign of Struggle"
"It appears that all nine members of a Fresno family found dead Friday were shot, and there was no sign of a struggle, investigators say.
The apparent father of the victims, Marcus Wesson, was being held on a bail of $9 million. Investigators think that Wesson may have been the grandfather of some of the children, as well, due to incest. Police also were trying to figure out if the oldest female victim assisted in the murders before killing herself."

"LENOIR CITY, Tenn. - Scores of officers surrounded a lakeside home Saturday in a standoff with a heavily armed teenager who killed a sheriff's deputy and kept officers at bay for more than a day.
The 16-year-old had semiautomatic weapons with multiple 30-round magazines and fired on officers as they approached, said Knox County Sheriff Tim Hutchison.
