Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. A pricing gun. It reminds me of when I worked as a clerk at the King's Supermarket in Morristown, NJ, and the AM/PM Mini-Mart in Henderson, NV.

King's is a yuppie supermarket, and markets to the tastes of the upwardly mobile. I don't know if they still do it, but they used to have "Singles Night" on Thursdays. Singles would go there to do their shopping, mingle with other singles, and then go to the nightclub down the street.....

BTW, the building across the street, which is now Town Hall, used to be the headquarters for Beneficial Finance, before they moved to that big facility outside Chester on US 206.

"A teenager who admitted shooting another teen during a fight near a youth football game in Syracuse will spend three and a half years in state prison.
Robert Smith, 18, of Syracuse was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in February to criminal possession of a weapon.
Smith told police that he shot 17-year-old Daquan Sullivan in the buttocks with a .38-caliber handgun because he thought Sullivan was going to stab him.
The shooting occurred as two gangs fought at halftime of a Syracuse Pop Warner game between teams of 13- to 15-year-old players while teams with five- and six-year-olds played a flag football game nearby."

"BELMONT — Owners of a sandpit which is adjacent to an apartment complex are stressing that the pit is off-limits to target shooting following a recent incident of bullets flying close to the complex’s playground while children were around.
Belmont police, meanwhile, have concluded their investigation into the incident in which the parent of one child fears that her daughter might have been grazed by a bullet.
Belmont Police Cpl. William Wright said Tuesday that subsequent investigation shows no compelling evidence to support that the young girl was hit by a bullet.
"We couldn’t link the actual injury to the shooting incident," said Wright."

"COSHOCTON -- Donald E. "D.J." Jones III, indicted in connection with shooting two relatives at their home March 13 pleaded innocent to eight felony counts Tuesday in Coshocton County Common Pleas Court.
Jones, 20, formerly of 803 Kenilworth Ave., pleaded innocent to aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and six other felony charges. The charges are in connection with the double shooting of his uncle, Shane Layland, and his grandmother, Roberta Cruxton, at their Kenilworth Avenue home, authorities said.
Layland died several hours after the shooting. Cruxton was released from The Ohio State University Medical Center March 19. "

"After the lineup, police charged Maloney with one count of aggravated robbery in connection with the shooting and carjacking of Julie Graves on March 3 in a Rice Village parking garage. She was wounded in the chest and survived.
Another lineup will be held Thursday with more witnesses to the murder of Helen Orman, 65, who was killed March 20 at a gas station, 2539 Bissonnet at Kirby, near Rice Village, as she vacuumed her vehicle. She was shot once in the head.
"We did attempt to talk to the man. He was uncooperative, combative, and showed absolutely no remorse whatsoever for any of the things he's been involved in," said Edward Gonzalez, with the Houston Police Homicide Department. "Beau Maloney was without money -- he basically had 30 cents to his name and he had a pistol that was fully loaded, so needless to say, all the elements were in place for him to act out again. So, we're glad we've got this guy off the streets."
Houston police said Maloney has a lengthy criminal record. He is wanted for various crimes in other states -- Florida, New Mexico, North Carolina and California. The warrants range from traffic violations to assaults to felony possession of ammunition."

CLINTON, N.C. -- Authorities in Sampson County say a surge in gun permit applications is a direct result of a series of armed home robberies.

During a six month period last year, 740 gun permits were issued. That is 102 more than at the same time the year before. The number of permits for concealed weapons quadrupled.

"With the home invasions being constantly in the news in our area and in other counties, people are becoming more aware," Sheriff Jimmy Thornton said.

"In the first incident, a man was shot around 1:30 this morning in the 2900 block of Garrison Blvd., said Detective Donny Moses, a police spokesman. The man was reportedly shot in the head and hand and died later at a hospital.
At 3 a.m., another man was shot in the 1500 block of E. Lanvale St., according to Moses. Police found the victim on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital and pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m., Moses said.
The men -- who police have yet to publicly identify -- became the 72nd and 73rd murder victims in the city this year. This time last year, there were 70 murders recorded, Moses said."

The city's 15th killing of the year occurred Wednesday when a merchant defended himself against three men who were trying to rob his store, police said yesterday. On Wednesday afternoon, the 28-year-old owner of Manhattan Fine Clothes near Lawrence Avenue and Markham Road fought back as the men forced him into a back room, police said.

One of the men trying to rob the store, a 24-year-old, was badly injured and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His two accomplices fled.

It was all very mysterious at the time, and the police weren't talking.

Well, it turns out there was no firearm involved at all -- not in the store owner's hands, anyhow.

A Scarborough clothing shop owner who killed a robbery suspect in his store last month is still waiting to learn whether he will face criminal charges. ... "The issue we are examining: Was the shop owner justified in using the force that he did use in the circumstances? Was it appropriate or was it excessive?" <Det. Sgt.> Skubic told a news conference at police headquarters.

... Police say the owner had just opened for business when three men walked into the shop with the intent of robbing it of clothing and cash. A struggle ensued and Kayan Kayson Smith, 24, was fatally injured, police say. The store owner was also hurt in the altercation.

An autopsy the next day concluded Smith died from "blunt force head injuries." Police are not saying what the store owner used to strike Smith, although the Centre of Forensic Sciences is examining "an implement we believe was used to inflict the injuries on Mr. Smith."

Yesterday, Skubic announced that police have arrested and charged two of Smith's alleged accomplices with robbery while armed with a firearm.

... No gun has been recovered, but the detective said there is "some evidence to suggest they were in possession of a firearm." No shots were fired in the store, which is in a strip mall on Lawrence Ave. E. near Markham Rd., he said. ... He called it one of the "intriguing" cases he has handled in his more than 10 years as a criminal investigator.

Goodness knows where Narf (I think it was, may he r.i.p.) came up with a story from the Globe and Mail. In any event, either he or whoever he got it from seems to have automatically assumed that there was a firearm involved, and he was presumably posting the story as an example of "defensive gun use".

Nope, not a firearmed shopkeeper, not in Canada. But a shopkeeper who nonetheless routed three goons who, apparently, had a handgun. And who perhaps even went above and beyond the call of self-defence.

If he did genuinely fear that he was going to be harmed, then his actions might well have been genuine self-defence. If you're up against three guys with a gun, the bar might have to be lowered a bit in terms of the deadliness of the force you're entitled to use. But if there was no reason to fear anything other than robbery, and no actual grievous personal injury, killing somebody would be a bit over the top. It just ain't allowed in Canada when it's done to resist theft, or an assault (pointing a firearm at someone is the "assault" element of robbery) where grievous injury/death isn't reasonably apprehended.

The evidence on that point will be his own account and the account of the two surviving robbers. They might not be the best witnesses, but that wouldn't necessarily make him the more credible. And given how little anyone is saying, one might wonder whether there is some back story that one isn't hearing. Like why a clothing store owner keeps an "implement" that can apparently be used to kill people, and why the goons picked that particular store. I don't think that The Gap keeps baseball bats and tire irons under the counter.
