GUNS OF THE DAY - 14 April 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. French 75mm howitzer
My gun of the day is the French 75mm howitzer. It marks the first practical application of hydraulic recoil systems being used in breech loading towed artillery pieces. Employed heavily in WWI, the French 75 can be seen on most Army posts today, used primarily as salute howitzers.

Edited on Wed Apr-14-04 10:33 AM by lunabush
please be very careful in your response.

Gang, time for a tone change - again. Posts calling out other DUers are not permitted anywhere on the board, let alone in this forum. In the past when one of the RKBAers have fucked up and said something stupid we have not permitted the continued belittling of that individual. I haven't followed the thread totally, but it would seem that a Pro Gun Control indivudal made a similar error. Points were made - now, move on.

thanks,

Lunabush,

4. Arrest Possible In Restaurant Manager's Shooting Death (OH)
"An arrest is expected soon in connection with the shooting death of a local restaurant manager last year, according to police.
Few details are available, but WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Jonathan Hawgood reported that David Parsons could face a murder charge for allegedly killing Mark Smith.
A cleaning crew found the body of Mark Smith, 36, of Burlington, Ky., at the Applebee's restaurant near Turkeyfoot Road in Crestview Hills, police said. Smith was the manager there, and was closing the restaurant when he was shot to death in the face by a disgruntled former employee, according to police. "

9. Defense attorney: Shooting result of ‘deadly horseplay’ (GA)
"LAWRENCEVILLE — No one disputes that the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Lilburn man was the result of “deadly horseplay” with a gun. But was it murder?
That’s what jurors will decide this week in the case of 19-year-old Juan Luis Anaya-Plasencia, accused of murder and aggravated assault in the death of his friend and co-worker Martin Gomez.
Anaya was just 17 years old on New Year’s Day 2003 when he playfully pointed the gun at the victim’s brother, Juan Gomez, and pulled the trigger, police allege. The gun didn’t discharge, so Anaya spun the chamber, pointed the gun at Martin Gomez, and fired a single shot toward where Gomez was laying on a bed. The bullet struck Gomez in the cheek and killed him."

More of that stunning intellect gun owners display so frequently...

"SEATTLE — A 21-year-old University of Washington student was charged yesterday with first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of his friend in Wallingford last week.
Prosecutors say Craig Ulrich accidentally shot Ryan Daniel Schaller, 23, with an assault rifle Thursday after an evening of drinking. Documents say Schaller held the barrel of the gun, which the men thought was unloaded, to his own chin and dared his friend to pull the trigger. "

21. Man Shot, Killed By Police In Undercover Drug Sting (OH)
"Local police shot and killed a man during an undercover drug transaction Tuesday.
Jonathan Crenshaw, 22, died after the shooting, which took place at 333 Donald St. in Columbia Township at about 4:30 p.m., WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Joelle Girone reported. He suffered gunshot wounds to the legs and torso.
Agent John Mercado was the undercover officer who shot Crenshaw. Mercado, a veteran agent, was working with the Regional Enforcement Narcotics Unit -- made up of officers from several jurisdictions -- Tuesday, according to Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis Jr.
"The deceased turned around and pointed a gun at Agent Mercado, who responded by firing a round at the suspect, striking him in the right thigh," Leis said. "The round spun the suspect around, then again, the suspect pointed his gun at Agent Mercado, who responded by firing two more rounds." "

"CUYAHOGA FALLS - A Twinsburg man accused of repeatedly striking another man with a baseball bat and threatening to shoot him appeared before Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court Judge Lisa Coates on Tuesday on charges of felonious assault and aggravated menacing.
Melvin Lomax, 36, of Gettysburg Drive, and Eugene Lawson, 35, were smoking marijuana at Lomax's home Monday when Lomax accused Lawson of having an affair with his wife, said Twinsburg Detective Sgt. Chris Noga.
Noga said Lomax then grabbed a metal baseball bat and hit Lawson several times on the back, arms, legs and chest. Lomax then allegedly pointed a gun at Lawson and threatened to shoot him."

31. Somerville man killed in shoot-out (TX)
"A long-standing feud between neighbors may have contributed to a shoot-out Monday night that killed a man in a typically peaceful Somerville neighborhood, investigators said.
Kent Evan Delcamp, 44, was found shot to death outside his home on Spanish Trails Drive in the Somerville Place subdivision shortly after 9:30 p.m. He apparently had been shot by a neighbor in self-defense, Burleson County Chief Deputy Mike Brackman said.
The neighbor who was involved in the altercation was interviewed by investigators Monday night. Based on that interview, Brackman said, the department decided not to file charges against the man.
Brackman said the case will be taken in the next six weeks to a grand jury, which will decide if charges should be filed. He would not identify the man.
“ There was a confrontation in the street, and a gunbattle took place there in the street,” he said. “Based on the information in his interview and the evidence we obtained at the crime scene, there is no reason to charge him."

"A mother was gunned down, begging for her life, early Wednesday morning as she went to a relative's southwest Houston apartment complex to pick up her 4-month-old baby.
Witnesses told police Lashantra Foster, 27, was shot once in the head around 1:15 a.m. as she pleaded for her life in the courtyard of her cousin's apartment complex, located on the 5400 block of Chimney Rock near Westpark.
"I heard, 'No, no, please don't!' and a shot. I came outside and found her (on the ground)," Keith Guthrie, the husband of the victim's cousin, said.
Police said two men were seen leaving the courtyard -- one in a northward direction, the other heading west. "

40. Gun Collector Testifies at Nichols Trial
"McALESTER, Okla. - A gun collector testified Wednesday that a man wearing a ski mask and military-style clothing bound him and covered his eyes with duct tape during a robbery that prosecutors say financed the Oklahoma City bombing.
Roger E. Moore testified at bombing conspirator Terry Nichols' state murder trial that the gunman took dozens of rifles and handguns, $8,700 in cash, and coins and jewels in the 1994 robbery at his home near Hot Springs, Ark.
Moore said he could not identify the gunman but is convinced he was not executed bomber Timothy McVeigh, who had stayed with Moore several times. The gunman was shorter and stockier than McVeigh and had darker skin, he said.
However, Moore said he suspected McVeigh might know something about the robbery and asked McVeigh to help him find out who was responsible. "

41. Somewhat more than a simple "collector"...
"McALESTER, Okla. - Weapons and ammunition found in bombing conspirator Terry Nichols' home after the Oklahoma City bombing were stolen months earlier from an Arkansas gun dealer, the dealer's girlfriend testified Tuesday.
Karen Anderson identified photographs of some of the stolen items as she was questioned about the Nov. 5, 1994, robbery of Roger Moore at his home near Hot Springs, Ark., and her contacts with executed bomber Timothy McVeigh.
Anderson said she and Moore operated a gun-show business called American Assault Co.; she sold ammunition and Moore sold guns.
She said as many as 35 rifles and handguns and packages of armor-piercing ammunition found in Nichols' home in Herington, Kan., were taken from Moore less than five months earlier. "
