In town they have the same problem as you. People will leave a trail of trash from the 7-11s to their homes. Seems to happen every where.

I was always convinced that all the 7-11 trash in the neighbourhood ended up in my driveway. (This is a very windy part of the world.)

Then I bought the house next door, and realized that half of it ends up in that driveway.

I understand that there are some stores in some locations (7-11s or not, I don't know) that actually have employees do some regular neighbourhood clean-up. Our local 7-11 management is too stupid to get the Saturday papers assembled, let alone have the brains or decency to think about community relations. Around here, when some of the kids on the block were young, we would do the cleaning up, along with putting flower pots on all the porches on the block and feeding the wildlife (squirrels and raccoons) and feral cats. It's that business about how a neighbourhood that looks like its residents give a shit is a neighbourhood less likely to become a nasty place to live. And it gave a few of the kids a grounding in "community" values and empathy that they weren't really getting at home.

I'm in the pimps, hookers and dealers part of town (the presence of the 7-11 prevents them from starving, I'm sure, and certainly provides a convenient meeting place) -- which still makes my neighbourhood way safer and more pleasant than any of its sort in the US. The absence of firearms would seem to have a fair bit to do with that. I have never once seen a gun or heard a gunshot, in 22 years on the block, or actually felt unsafe, despite the problems.
