Teacher Arrested After Bookmark Called Concealed Weapon
TAMPA, Fla. -- A weight may soon be lifted off a Maryland woman charged with carrying a concealed weapon in an airport.

It wasn't a gun or a knife. It was a weighted bookmark.

Kathryn Harrington was flying home from vacation last month when screeners at the Tampa, Fla., airport found her bookmark. It's an 8.5-inch leather strip with small lead weights at each end.

Airport police said it resembled a weighted weapon that could be used to knock people unconscious. So the 52-year-old special education teacher was handcuffed, put into a police car, and charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Ah yes, the controllers at work "safeguarding" us again. Hey, why not just ban books and save everyone the agony of carrying a concealed "Websters"?

1. A math teacher also arrested
Not to take any weight from the seriousness of the Maryland teacher's predicament, but ...

A math teacher was detained when authorities found he was carrying a compass and a protractor. He was arrested for Weapons of Math Instruction.

2. Sounds almost like a Sap
Used to carry a 6-ounce, 8-inch sap during my younger days. Those will drop a man like a rock.

3. In my hands ...
even a bookmark can be deadly!

Oh, but not because I'm a highly skilled assassin or anything. Just clumsy!

5. They probably made sure to arrest her
after they found out she was a teacher. Trashing on teachers seems to be a favorite pastime over here in Florida, especially for the media.

10. Kids make bookmarks like that all the time around here for teachers
They put lead fishing weights on each end so the marker can hold pages down in new books or when there's a breeze from the HVAC or fan.

It reminds me of the time I got all but strip searched in Las Vegas because a sniffer detected nitrates. My dirty laundry included the clothes I'd worh to a range during my trip. A fact I warned the TSA people about.

What a bunch of morons!
