GUNS IN THE NEWS--September 23, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Man Arrested After Loaded Gun Found At Logan
"NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that a man identified as John R. Chen, 30, was taken into custody about 7 a.m. after security screeners at Terminal B detected a Glock 27 pistol in his bag. He was trying to board a U.S. Airways flight to Buffalo, N.Y. Authorities inspected the bag and determined that it was fully loaded.
Some passengers were incredulous that anyone would carry a gun in their bags.
"Shouldn't have people on the planes with guns. It's ridiculous. You kidding me? Shoot people. It's ridiculous. After 9/11? I come from New York. It's ridiculous," passenger Kevin Cronin said.
Chen told police he did not know the gun was in his bag. He is licensed to carry a gun, but it is a criminal offense to carry a concealed weapon on an airplane. He was booked and appeared for arraignment at East Boston District Court. "

2. Gun suspect's case is sent to trial court (OH)
"BOWLING GREEN - A Bowling Green man charged last week with shooting two men after a quarrel in a downtown parking lot was bound over to Wood County Common Pleas Court yesterday.
During a preliminary hearing in Bowling Green Municipal Court, Judge Mark Reddin found probable cause to pursue charges of felonious assault, inducing panic, and improperly discharging a firearm against Brian Steen, but he dismissed a second count of felonious assault relating to a gunshot that missed one of the victims.
Police said Mr. Steen fired at three men in the parking lot of a convenience store at East Wooster and Prospect streets Sept. 15, striking Matthew Llanas, 20, of Bowling Green in the legs and Josaph McGlaughlin, 22, of Wayne, in the shirt. The bullet did not hit Mr. McGlaughlin's body."

12. Senate Dems reject proposed weapons ban (ME)
Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 04:18 PM by NorthernSpy
Last I checked, the Bangor Daily News had not put this article on their website, so I'll give you a few snippets from today's print copy (pB6):

Senate Dems reject proposed weapons ban

by Jeff Tuttle
of the News Staff

BANGOR -- A group of Senate Democrats came out firing Wednesday against a plan from one of their own to enact a statewide assault weapons ban similar to the federal ban that expired last month.

"Maine doesn't need this bill," said Sen. Stephen Stanley, D-Medway, one of a handful of rural Democratic candidates who, locked in tough campaigns that could help determine control of the Senate, came out to oppose the proposed ban at a Bangor news conference.

"We should only pass laws that are needed and will be effective. The proposal ... is neither," said Stanley, who because of redistricting is facing another incumbent, Sen. Paul Davis, R-Sangerville, who also opposes the ban.

(...)

"Our people wanted to make it clear to voters where they stood on this issue," said Benjamin Grant of the Senate Democratic Campaign Committee.

I don't think that Ethan Strimling (the Portlander who made the proposal) is a bad person, and I like most of his stands on the issues. However, I think that when it comes to guns, he displays the heedless bigotry that characterizes the anti-rkba faction. That he would risk alienating most of the party just to make a proposal that cannot reasonably be expected to change any Mainer's life for the better -- and which has NO chance of making it out of committee in the first place -- is extremely disturbing, especially when you consider what all is at stake in this upcoming election.

It's great to see that the Dems are wasting no time in slapping this nonsense down.

Mary

13. Girl, 16, victim of Oakland shooting
"A shooting Wednesday night claimed the life of a 16-year-old Oakland girl standing in front of her home, an Oakland Police Department spokesman said today.
Sgt. Pete Sarna said that police received a report of gunfire in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way around at 10:47 p.m.
Responding officers found a 16-year-old female suffering from gunshot wounds, Sarna said.
The girl, identified as Greshanda Williams, was apparently standing in front of her residence when the shooting happened, Sarna said. "

14. Central Fla. Toddler Killed In Apparent Accidental Shooting
"GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A four-year-old Alachua County boy is dead after being shot in the head at his family's apartment, and deputies believe it was an accident.
Officals said Natron McCreary was at home with his mother Natalie, 22, her boyfriend, a family friend and two other small children Wednesday. They said he was shot in the living room.
Natron's mother ran out of the apartment to get help and a neighbor called 911. The family friend then drove the group out of the apartment complex, flagging down a fire truck at a nearby intersection.
Paramedics took the child to Shands hospital at the University of Florida, where he died. Details of the shooting itself are still under investigation. "

15. String of Drive-by Shootings Has Police on Alert (UT)
"Police are investigating after a dozen gunshots were fired at a Salt Lake City home early Monday morning. That was just one incident in a recent string of drive-by shootings.
Police say all types of crimes, including drive-by shootings, go up when the weather warms up and when kids go back to school. That's disturbing for law enforcement and neighbors.
The night before, gunshots rang out in another Salt Lake City neighborhood. No one was hurt and police are still investigating.
Then, over the weekend, another drive-by after a fight broke out at a four-plex in Salt Lake City. That shooting was an apparent retaliation over a fight where one man was stabbed and died. Police have arrested two brothers, Alejandro Carillo and Raul Carrillo, for homicide. "

16. Police shoot, kill man in East End (VA)
"A young man was shot to death yesterday afternoon by Richmond police after allegedly opening fire on an officer who confronted him on an East End street.
Police said the man may have been one of two suspects being sought in an armed robbery of a woman on North 24th Street, about six blocks away from the fatal encounter, which began at 1:30 p.m. near the corner of Mosby Street and Fairmount Avenue.
"One of the officers encountered an armed suspect who fired upon the officer," said police Chief Andre Parker. "The officer gave chase to the individual."
The chase ended with what Parker described as "an exchange of some gunfire" that left the man dead in an alley behind the Marketplace 14 convenience store on Mosby, across the street from Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School."

17. Man released in bomb plot case is jailed again (MI)
"It was about 19 hours of semi-freedom for Dominic Queentry, and it ended Wednesday afternoon with a few words from a judge and an escorted trip back to the Macomb County Jail.
Queentry, the third suspect charged in the case of a Clinton Township teen accused of plotting a Columbine-like massacre at his high school, was arrested last week on charges of possessing explosives and marijuana-related offenses. At the time, police said he helped Andrew Osantowski, 17, obtain bomb-making materials and showed him how to blow up a tree.
Later that day, police displayed three marijuana plants taken from Queentry's home next to an assault rifle, knives, shotguns, Nazi paraphernalia and other items taken from Osantowski's home. Queentry acknowledged to the Free Press that he uses marijuana, but he denied any connection to Osantowski or his apparently racist views.
Kaplan also is prosecuting Osantowski and his father, Marvin Osantowski, 52. Andrew Osantowski could face 20 years in prison if convicted on charges of threatening terrorism, receiving and concealing stolen firearms and other offenses."

18. Where are Souder’s priorities? (IN)
"Northeast Indiana residents have good reason to question where Congressman Mark Souder’s priorities lie.
Souder has been receiving national exposure, not for anything he’s doing for his constituents but for his attempts to use the federal government to overturn a local government decision.
Our congressman believes people in Washington, D.C., should be able to carry assault rifles and handguns.
He believes that Washington police should not be able to jail anyone for having unregistered weapons."
