need some gun ownership information, can anyone help?

i figure there might be someone here who can help. i need to find a list of gun ownership rates, by state for the US. the only thing that's close that i've found so far is: http://www.pubpol.duke.edu/people/faculty/cook/SAN01-25.pdf

but that bases the ownership rates on crime, which isn't at all what i'm looking for. can anyone help me out with this? i've been looking for over an hour today and can't find what i need.

Its odd though that the poster cant extract the information he/she wants from that page. :shrug:

It's a little late for me to start searching for the data you desire, but some thoughts on the problem.

Since registration of firearms is not required in all states (not sure which states DO require registration), any data on ownership by state will have to be survey based.

Gary Kleck, at Florida State Univ., might have some data.

There is a high rate of gun ownership in my house.

As for everyone else, I have no idea. There is no gun registration in the US (except in a few states) and so, as another poster said, the only info is going to be survey based, and we all know how accurate that is. I've seen a wide range of estimates on how many guns there are here and how many people own them. Here are some data from the Brady Campaign website:

Here are their top bullet points:

* There are approximately 192 million privately owned firearms in the U.S. - 65 million of which are handguns.<1>

*Currently, an estimated 39% of households have a gun, while 24% have a handgun.<2>

*In 1998 alone, licensed firearms dealers sold an estimated 4.4 million guns, 1.7 million of which were handguns.<3> Additionally, it is estimated that 1 to 3 million guns change hands in the secondary market each year, and many of these sales are not regulated.<4>

Just at a gut level, the statistics above seem believable to me.

Those statistics they give have references; you might check on those to see if there is state-by-state information. You might also call them up. They'll either have the data or tell you where to look for it.
