Enough Palestinian cars
By Gideon Levy

We must stop this luxury immediately: The Palestinians should be prohibited from traveling in cars on all the roads of the West Bank and not only intercity roads, as was decided following the drive-by shooting attack at the Gush Etzion junction last week.

Any other solution, more "humane," will not prevent terror attacks. In any case, most Palestinians have become used to living without cars, without movement, without freedom. Therefore, let us stop playing with highfalutin words and partial solutions: no more Palestinian cars on our country's roads, including its occupied territories.

Toward the end of the week, people here were frightened a bit by the American criticism about the closing of main roads in the West Bank to private cars. A source in Jerusalem hurried to tell Haaretz, "There is no new plan to separate traffic on the roads of the West Bank." And the defense minister promised from London that it was only a temporary measure. Thus, it was proved again that our last moral barrier is not to be found in Jerusalem, but rather in Washington. The thought that people like George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice are the guardians of our morality should make us shudder, but that is the fact.

Nonetheless, the government source admitted that there is a contingency plan for separating traffic that would only be implemented if the Palestinian Authority collapses. It is difficult to understand what the relation is between the collapse of the PA and the complete collapse of what remains of our human values, as expressed in the imposition of chilling collective punishments.

1. Gee, maybe if Israel would stop the killing of innocents for revenge
there wouldn't be such a problem.
Instead lets take away Israel's nuclear capabilities and impose sanctions on them till they understand that they have to treat others as they wish to be treated.
Or maybe they are treating others as they wish to be treated already, in which case Israel is the problem.

4. No, just learn to play nice.
Violence begets violence. It is self perpetuating. The two eyes for an eye concept is not the way to live in peace.
It has to start somewhere and Israel has most of the war toys, so guess what? It is up to israel to seek peace.

5. It is up to both parties to seek peace, not just one side

7. Yep, it is started every few years and breaks down. I think
it's breaking down now but for different reasons than the last times under Arafat... there is a real increase in violence the last several weeks. It's a sort of amazing "deja vu all over again"

8. very interesting links, thanks
especially this one
http://www.join.org.au/media/brookes20030307.htm

"snip
I genuinely think this is a problem and that it needs to be urgently tackled. This means that we should not cave in to the left's moral posturing. Allowing their accusations to go unchallenged encourages them to make even more outrageous charges.

That the left has turned Israel's plight into a propaganda victory for Arafat is evidence of the success of its propaganda campaign. It is something of a dark miracle that they turned public opinion against a threatened Israel by portraying the country as a jackbooted bully beating defenceless Arabs, when it is not actually murdering them."

9. As I have hinted at and posted previously --
We "Progressives" are shooting ourselves in the foot --- driving "activism" (read "activism" as money, envelope stuffing, older pickets, attending candidates' nights - whatever) away from politics generally. And from Democrats in particular.

    Bush is on the ropes.
    2000th dead American in Iraq.
Total collapse of DHS and FEMA in Louisiana.
    Indictments coming down any moment.
Arnie is perceived as a jerk

And - in the bluest region of the bluest state - we can not get a decent crowd to come out for an "Anti-Arnold" Rally. Arnold has some real Rovian propositions on the ballot -- and we can't drum up support against them. ANSWER turned off the adults.

I hate to say it - Jeb handled Hurricane Wilma much better then George has handled anything.

And I have begun to disregard the shriller voices in our party -- and I am a partisan Dem.

And I have begun to much more carefully scrutinize and analyze what causes I contribute to.

I am getting shrilled out, politicked out, and grossed out.

And a lot of it is the take over of the Peace Movement by the "International ANSWER" types and their agenda -- and the constant harping on the "Israel Can Do No Right --- and the Palestinians Can Do No Wrong" meme--- and "disinvest" and "boycott."

It's going to come back to bite use dems in the butt - as John Ellis "Jeb" Bush takes the Oath as 44th President on January 21, 2007. (Hurricane Wilma is actually give "Bush 44" a chance to look one heck of a lot better then "Bush 43")

Karl Rove and Grover Norquist couldn't do a a better job the we Dems are doing in driving off our base..

Some shriller Dems are doing the Rove-Norquist work for Rove and Norquist.

10. I couldn't agree with you more
We are driving off not only the base but even some of the strong lefty base. Some were brave enough here to speak out against the recent large ANSWER rally about a month or two ago in that Democrats will lose the next elections if we are seen as far out as ANSWER. Remember the Daschle bashing here? He had a fairly conservative state to win and couldn't take the far left positions but some people couldn't get that through their noggins. So he was trashed and now we have a pug in his place. There was a thread a few months ago on which Democrats in Congress were left enough and I think two or so qualified for the thread starter. You also see threads where people say they won't vote anymore for their state Democrats because of a vote they don't like. Well, there goes another vote to the pug running against that Democrat. Yeah, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.
