Walls of Jerusalem's Old City in danger of collapse
Walls of Jerusalem's Old City in danger of collapse

By Agence France Presse (AFP)

Saturday, November 19, 2005

JERUSALEM: Large sections of the 16th century walls surrounding Jerusalem's Old City are in danger of collapse unless they undergo immediate restoration, an Israeli newspaper reported on Friday.

According to an engineering survey conducted by the Israeli Antiquities Authority, 380 meters, or one-tenth, of the walls' extension are in immediate danger of collapse, Maariv said.

The survey showed 11 sections of the stone wall needing attention, most of them located along the northern stretch, which flanks the Muslim quarter, and the southern stretch, which skirts the Jewish quarter.

The area in most need of work is the section that flanks the southern supporting wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the third holiest site in Islam.

2. Will that help bring on the "end days"?
Actually, I'd like to see the temple walls and Dome of the Rock nuked into oblivion after getting all the people to safety. So radioactive that no one could ever use it as an excuse for territorial war ever again.

3. Not me--aside from the fact that there would be a war over who did the
nuking, the architectural details are part of our planet's history, and worth preserving.

4. World Heritage site
snip" The safeguarding of the monumental, religious and cultural heritage of the Holy City of Jerusalem has been one of UNESCO's main concerns since 1967. To this end, the Executive Board and the General Conference have repeatedly requested the application of internationally recognised principles, especially the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (the Hague, 1954), the 1956 New Delhi Recommendation on International Principles Applicable to Archaeological Excavations and the 1972 World Heritage Convention. In conformity with UNESCO's resolutions, financial aid for heritage restoration projects in Jerusalem has been requested from Member States. Favourable responses to these appeals have enabled UNESCO to finance the restoration and conservation of a number of monuments and religious and cultural properties in this city."
