Blast destroys Monument to Gaza's Unknown Soldier
<snip>

"An explosion destroyed the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Gaza on Tuesday and the Palestinian Interior Ministry said the blast was caused by a missile fired by an Israeli aircraft.

The Israeli army denied responsibility.

Some Palestinians surveying the debris speculated that local Islamists, who view the statue as a graven image forbidden by Islam, may have been responsible. Others blamed Israel.

The monument, which does not contain a tomb, was built in 1956 by Egypt, which administered Gaza then, as a memorial to Egyptians and Palestinians killed in fighting with Israel.

It was destroyed by Israeli forces when they captured the territory in the 1967 Middle East war."
