An Israel Air Force warplane fired a missile at a target in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, but it fell in an open area and caused no injury, witnesses said.
The strike came amid heavy shooting as Palestinians fired rockets at Israel and Israel Defense Forces troops fired back with artillery in fighting touched off by Israel's killing of a leading militant in response to a suicide bombing that killed five. The Israeli army said the air force had attacked an access road to sites from which rockets had been launched to prevent further shooting from the area.
Earlier IDF gunners fired dozens of artillery shells into northern Gaza in response to rockets and mortars fired by militants responding to Israel's killing on Wednesday of Mahmud el-Arqan, field commander of the Popular Resistance Committees.
