Israel denies Gaza siege plan
Israel denies Gaza siege plan
Saturday 10 December 2005, 15:21 Makka Time, 12:21 GMT

Israel has said it has no plans to impose an economic siege on the Palestinians whether or not President Mahmoud Abbas cracks down on armed groups.

"I have no intention of placing the Palestinians under siege - the opposite is true," Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz told Israel Radio on Saturday, contradicting an Israeli TV report on Friday.

An official in Mofaz's office said on Friday night that he had issued Abbas a 48-hour ultimatum threatening to limit the flow of goods across its boundary unless the Palestinian Authority stopped the flow of fighters and weapons across Gaza's border crossing with Egypt.

Mofaz made no mention of a deadline in the radio interview, except to say that he was waiting to hear from a US envoy who was trying to resolve differences over Gaza's border.

The article goes on to offer additional comments by Mofaz regarding the Rafah crossing and then discusses a blockade in Nablus.

1. The non-denial denial.
"One the steps recommended by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz in retaliation against the Netanya suicide bombing, is that Israel impose a closure on the Gaza Strip, only allowing the passage of goods via the Karni crossing. The passage of workers via the Erez crossing would therefore be prohibited.

This step contravenes an agreement reached between Israel and the Palestinian Authority on the Gaza Strip border crossings, which allows Israel to shut down a crossing for passage only in the wake of an attack or warning directly related to that crossing. In addition, if Prime Minister Ariel Sharon accepts this suggestion he would be breaching a promise he gave U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and special envoy James Wolfensohn that Israel would refrain from imposing a closure on the Gaza Strip in retaliation to attacks in Israel proper (this was one of the major sections in the negotiations preceding the crossings agreement)."

3. so?......
it should be clear....gaza now has access to Egypt and the world...israel no longer has any economic responsability toward the palestenains in Gaza. It would probably be a good idea for them to develop an economy that is not dependent upon israel, since both its workers and exporting of food to israel is dependent upon their ability to control their own suicide bombers and missles shooters.....

if they cant do that, israel owes them nothing.
