Arab-trained Palestinian terrorists have entered Gaza and have missles
Weapons experts in Palestinian terror groups who have undergone training in Lebanon, Syria and possibly Iran have recently infiltrated the Gaza Strip, a senior security official said on Sunday.

The official said that after Israel pulled out of Gaza, several Palestinians who had attended training camps run by Iranians and Hezbollah members entered the Strip, apparently from Sinai.

In the last few years, both Iran and Hezbollah have invested a lot of effort in assisting terror organizations in the West Bank and Gaza, helping them manufacture explosives and high-trajectory weapons such as Qassam rockets and mortar shells.

.....

Israel has also recently received information, not yet fully confirmed, that improved Katyusha rockets are being smuggled into the Gaza Strip. These rockets have a 20-kilometer range and a 6.3-kilogram warhead, and are more accurate than the Qassam rockets. However, the effectiveness of the improved weaponry is still limited; Hezbollah and Palestinian terror groups have been firing similar rockets at Israel from Lebanon for many years, but without much accuracy

hope this makes the mods "happy"...now then where were we....

ah yes, we were discussing the options that israel has concerning the present kassam and the katyushas that might presently be in gaza..now i'm looking for some realistic solutions that can be applied with a week time frame....

up to this point few have been killed and wounded....but thats hardly the point, Those missles are aimed at population centers and in the mintmum terrorize the civilian population, eventually they will kill again...and katyushas are that much more dangerous....

take note: kassams are fired almost every day over the border in to israel.

option 1: do nothing and let them fall and possible kill where they may...(i take that a bit personal...)

option 2: do something......and that now is the question at hand....

anything realisic i will be happy to pass on to the israeli govt and IDF

3. I'm sure the IDF counter-battery fire is deadly accurate.

The only problem is, these are basically model rockets that can be set up by one or two guys who can launch them from half a mile away with a cell phone. Pretty hard to prevent.

How about a political solution? Withdrawal from the West Bank settlements -- not just the limited Gaza handover -- might be a place to start.

5. artillary is not the answer....
its perhaps part, it keeps the pressure on..but it wont prevent their shooting since as you mentioned it doesnt take much to launch them...

the political solution will not stop the missles this week, or next. And in fact if gaza is an indication, withdrawl will put kassams in reach of the israeli knesset...

6. The Russians in Afghanistan had good counter-battery fire
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 10:41 AM by formercia
and it was very effective until the insurgents started using timers on their rockets and were long gone by the time return fire arrived.

I wonder how they get a 122mm rocket into Gaza. It takes at least 3 men to carry it. 1 for the warhead and at least two for the motor. One reason it's so effective is the notched steel framentary liner inside the warhead. It acts much like a very big hand grenade. Think of a MK26 grenade but a lot bigger.

7. Right. Who needs cell phones.
Actually, the Russians did the same thing in World War Two. This is basically 1940s technology.

8. The 122 mm rocket has an electrical plug coming out of the motor
identical to a european 220V. mains plug. It goes to a squib inside a container of black powder located at the top of the motor. Normally the 122 is mounted on a vehicular launcher and ignited by the power from the vehicle battery, but it can be ignited even by flashlight batteries. It doesn't take a rocket scientist.....

9. It's silly to call them "missiles."

I wouldn't want those things aimed at my neighborhood, of course.

Were you in Afghanistan during the 1980s, or are you a more recent alumnist?

10. I'm very familiar with the 122
from some work we did in the 80's, much to the annoyance of the Soviets. I don't plan on taking any trips to Russia. I would not be welcome.

Just curious. How many other retired intel community people do you think are here?

Do you think there's already been an informal agreement to early retire the neocons? Will Cheney and Bush last out their terms?

13. Early retirement with extreme prejudice
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 11:18 AM by formercia
as for Fearless Leader and Mr. Death, they are their own worst enemies.

There are probably a lot more than would like to admit it. I lost my cherry a long time ago, so I don't give a hoot.

14. Are we talking about the following?
Frankin and Libby to jail. Feith and Wurmser out on their butts. Wolfowitz and Bolton reassigned. Lots of others have been interviewed or testified before GJs, and may yet be indicted.

Who's being dealt with extreme prejudice? I haven't heard of any mysterious fatalities in this Administration.

16. smuggling or via the border ....
the border to egypt is very porus with very lax security....more so the Bedouin on both sides of the border are professional smugglers

option 2, tunnels. the tunnel makers in rafah are extremely good at their trade

option 3,...via the border control: egypt/palestenain....the europeans there have no power to stop anything and the israelis who watch it via TV camera have an 8 minute lag

or via the sea....just take a small boat from the sinai-egyptian territorial waters and in minutes your in gaza
