Egypt prepares for possible Gaza invasion
CAIRO, June 27 (UPI) -- Egypt has reinforced security along its Gaza border following Israeli threats to launch a large-scale military operation in the strip to free a missing soldier.
An Egyptian security source speaking on condition of anonymity told United Press International that early Tuesday, the Egyptian authorities deployed 2,500 security forces along the Rafah crossing, which links Gaza to the Egyptian territory, as a pre-emptive measure to counter the possible influx of Palestinian refugees in the case of an Israeli invasion of Gaza.
The source said the authorities imposed a curfew on the Egyptian side as a prelude to any possible emergencies and to protect the lives of citizens.
Israel's daily Haaretz Tuesday quoted unidentified Palestinian officials as saying that Egypt had reinforced security on the border with Gaza, fearing the possibility that the Palestinian groups who kidnapped the Israeli conscript might try to smuggle him into Egypt through tunnels dug under the Rafah crossing.
