US vetoes UN draft against Israeli plans to remove Arafat
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 08:17 PM by Darranar
The United States has vetoed a UN resolution opposing Israeli plans to expel Palestinian Yasser Arafat, saying the text fails to name Palestinian groups blamed for suicide bombings.

Eleven states, including France, China and Russia, voted for a draft resolution presented by Arab countries at the United Nations.

Britain, Bulgaria and Germany abstained and the United States voted against.

The text "demands Israel, the occupying power, to drop any effort to deport the elected president of the Palestinian Authority and cease threatening his security."

1. The proverbial "green light"
Let's see if the GOI has the shortsightedness and/or the balls to follow through.

11. I'd rather see
the phrase "ovaries to carry through" has a better flow.

2. "The question is not whether we get rid of Arafat, but rather how."
So said IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Yaalon today, adding that this question is bothering not only Israel, but also the Americans, the Europeans, Egypt, and the Arabs in general. "There are those within that are trying to lead an approach of abandoning terrorism, in the understanding that it is in their interest," Yaalon said.

The Chief of Staff said that the Arab offer of another ceasefire, broadcast on Israeli media today by leading PA military official Jibril Rajoub, is merely an attempt to "tempt us with another hudna, because they are afraid of what will happen to them...

3. Their excuse is paltry...
"It doesn't mention Hamas." Big deal.

They'd come up with one regardless of the resolution's text.

5. The Bush Admin. alienates
the world again. Bush can now forget about Pakistan sending troops to assist in Iraq. Any US resolutions re: Iraq are now doomed. A wedge has been driven between the US and Spain.
Especially entertaining is the idea that John Negroponte cast the veto.

"Negroponte supervised the creation of the El Aguacate air base in Honduras during the 1980's. The base was used as a secret detention and torture center. In August 2001 excavations at the base discovered the corpses of 185 people, including two Americans, who were tortured, killed and buried at this base. "

What do the families of the 185 tortured and murdered people at El Aguacate have to say about Negroponte casting "anti-terrorism" votes at the UN?

7. I think the implication would be that
the notion of Negroponte being "anti-terrorist"
has a certain irony to it.

8. If he was pro-terrorist
and now is voting against the resolution to forbid the removal of a terrorist, perhaps he is following orders. Anyway, it is not the man who creates the historical facts. The facts were already known, already exist. Man can accept them or not.

9. I was just attempting an explanation of what was meant,
which seemed obvious to me, I am not much interested in this
argument.

10. Negroponte
created plenty of historical facts in Central America under Reagan. He is one of the worst human-rights abusers this country has ever produced. His human rights record in Honduras is shocking and appalling. For Negroponte to be the US ambassador to the UN shows the true colors of the Bush administration. Yes, he is following orders. But not from the State Department, but rather from the OSP. The Maryknoll religious order has a good bio on our "anti-terrorist" Negroponte.
