Muslim leader Ahmed Abu Laban dies at 60

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Ahmed Abu Laban, Denmark's most prominent Muslim leader and a central figure in last year's uproar over the Prophet Muhammad cartoons, has died from cancer, his organization said Friday. He was 60.

Abu Laban died late Thursday at the Hvidovre Hospital in Copenhagen after battling lung cancer, said Kasem Ahmad, a spokesman for the Islamic Faith Community.

A Palestinian immigrant who became Denmark's leading imam, Abu Laban was thrust into the international spotlight during the firestorm over the prophet cartoons, when he accused Denmark of being disrespectful of Islam and Muslim immigrants.

He angered many Danes by seeking support from the Middle East in his fight against the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, which first published the controversial cartoons.

Publicly he denied it, but he supposedly praised the people who did it. The person you are thinking of whose lectures supposedly served as the germ for the assassination was Imam Fawaz though the murderer, Mohammed Bouyeri, was a member of the extremist Islamist terrorist Hofstad Network tied to other violent activities including bomb plots and other murder plans.

included spurious 'Muhammed cartoons' in with the ones that were actually published in Denmark, then went on a tour through Muslim countries to make sure that imams were sufficiently pissed off to preach hate and inspire revenge. This happened a few months after the publication of the cartoons.

It wasn't until *after* his tour that violence and riots occurred. Even though the real cartoons had been published in a few Muslim countries within a week or two of their Danish debut.

Personally, I think he's guilty of incitement to riot, mayhem, and murder. However, since he merely lied to other imams--in the name of true Islam, no doubt--he has cover.
