Company pulls plug on contentious Jerusalem walkway

The company pulled the plug on the project after Jerusalem Mayor
Uri Lupoliansky announced Monday he was re-evaluating the plans for
the walkway, although the archaeological excavations at the site,
which under Israeli law have to be carried out, were continuing.

The walkway project has sparked worldwide Muslim fury and led to
running protests in the holy city amid charges that Israel is seeking
to undermine the mosques in the Haram al-Sharfi/Temple Mount
compound, which is Islam's third holiest site and where Muslims
believe the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven.

The complex is also the holiest site in Judaism because it
contains the archaeological remnants of their biblical temple
destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD, and abuts the Western Wall, the
only surviving structure pertaining to the temple.

Israel said the proposed walkway is needed to replace a temporary
walkway, built after the original badly-weathered structure collapsed
three years ago after heavy snowstorms and a minor earthquake.

May I suggest perhaps a People-Mover or a Monorail? No?
