Thousands of Iranians visit Israeli holocaust website
Edited on Mon Apr-16-07 07:15 PM by bemildred
JERUSALEM: Thousands of Iranian surfers every month visit a new Holocaust website in Farsi run by Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, despite their leadership’s questioning the Nazi genocide of Jews, the museum said. The website was put online by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem in January, and has so far had some 25,100 visits, including 12,170 from inside Iran, spokeswoman Estee Yaari said. It includes 20 historical chapters on World War II, the Nazi regime, the systematic killings and photos from the Nazi death camps and ghettos. “We believe that making credible, comprehensive information about the Holocaust available to Persian speakers can contribute to the fight against Holocaust denial,” said Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev. Shalev calls the website a powerful tool against Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric, which has included calls for the Jewish state to be “wiped off the map.”

---

According to emails translated by Yad Vashem, most Iranian surfers who visit the site say they are staunch opponents of their country’s leadership.

1. That's a nice story and shows respect. I was fortunate
to have visited the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, prior to its upgrade, years ago. I remember the huge pile of rocks, and I contributed one, to Schindler's grave/memorial.
It's a very somber site, and I feel fortunate to have been there.

4. It seemed like a good thing to me.
The internet has many uses. Spreading knowledge is one of the best.

2. But, but, but...
I thought that the Iranians were just a lousy bunch of anti-Semites who wholly supported their glorious leader Ahmadinejad, who wants a new Holocaust...

:sarcasm:

6. I have an Iranian friend. When he introduced himself he said he was
from "Iran, you know, axis of evil" and laughed. He would be insulted if anyone thought he didn't know about the Holocaust.
