Two months ago, security forces arrested an Islamic Jihad terrorist in the city of Bat Yam, south of Tel Aviv, after he ditched his explosive device in a Rishon Lezion dumpster.


An indictment filed against him this week revealed that the would-be bomber attempted to activate the device, which weighed 15 kilograms, while traveling on a bus from Jaffa to Rishon Lezion, but failed to do so due to a malfunction, apparently because the batteries were faulty.

The investigation revealed that Abu al-Rob had been involved in a number of attempts to target IDF soldiers and Israeli citizens.

When I read the full story the part that popped out was the fact that he got on a "long bus" that was packed with commuters - and took a seat near the middle - to kill as many of them as possible.

I guess I was feeling more disgust than humor when I posted it. But the paras I chose to highlight do create a view that could be taken that way.

There's also a certain "energizer bunny" aspect to the never-ending claims from one side here - in a variety of creative incarnations - that the Palestinian resistance only entails peaceful forms of non-violent persuasion.

One must choose between tears and laughter, and my constitution tends towards the latter, particularly when there is a gallows element to the situation.

That the person in question was bent on mass killing is certainly true, and it is a great good fortune that a flaw in the mechanism he meant to employ prevented his success in that end.

There are no factual grounds whatever for a claim that Arab Palestinian resistance to Israel has been even predominantly non-violent. They might well have made a good deal more progress had that been the case.
