Report: Gilad Shalit being held in booby-trapped Gaza building
<snip>

"Channel 2 television reported Sunday that an Israel Defense Forces soldier captured a year ago was being held in the southern Gaza Strip in an underground room inside a booby-trapped building.

Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Palestinian gunmen in a cross-border raid into Israel from the Gaza Strip on June 25, 2006.

The reports said Shalit was being held near Shaboura refugee camp, close to the town of Rafah in the southern part of the coastal territory."

<snip>

"The television report said Shalit was being cared for by two captors with whom he had formed a "cordial" relationship and he was being treated fairly.

Shalit's living quarters were described as a two-room underground store with enough supplies to last two weeks, accessible down a ladder through a 15-meter deep shaft which the report said was lined with explosives.

It added that the captors receive supplies and newspaper cuttings every two weeks and that they had been ordered to take good care of their prisoner."

2. Rights group B'Tselem: Holding Shalit as hostage is a war crime
<snip>

"Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem declared Monday the holding of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit as a hostage is a war crime and he must be immediately released, on the one year anniversary of his abduction.

B'Tselem mainly works to protect the human rights of Palesinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The organization emphasized in a press statement that those involved in the kidnapping bear individual criminal liability for the war crime."

<snip>

"B'Tselem said: "The circumstances of his capture and the behavior of his captors clearly indicate that he is a hostage."

International humanitarian law absolutely prohibits "the taking and holding of a person by force in order to compel the enemy to meet certain demands, while threatening to harm or kill that person if the demands are not met," the organization stated."

Captive Israeli soldier heard in Gaza tape -TV

JERUSALEM, June 25 (Reuters) - An Israeli soldier captured
a year ago was apparently heard asking for medical
treatment and urging Israel to release Palestinian prisoners,
in an audio tape played on Israeli television on Monday.

Earlier, Palestinian militants in Gaza said they were about
to release such a tape on the first anniversary of Sergeant
Gilad Shalit's capture. The voice on the tape could not
immediately be confirmed as that of the soldier but Israeli
television stations said it appeared to be authentic.

4. Hamas releases audio message of Israeli soldier
GAZA CITY (AFP) - The armed wing of Hamas on Monday released an audio message said to be from captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who said his health was deteriorating and that he needed hospital treatment.

"I've been in prison one year. My situation is deteriorating. I need an extended period in hospital," said the voice in the audio clip posted on the website of Hamas's armed wing exactly one year after Shalit was taken.

"I am sorry that the Israeli government has not shown more interest. It should meet the demands of my kidnappers so I can be released," said the voice in Hebrew on the tape.

"I am Gilad Shalit. I've been arrested by Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades. Mother, father, sisters, brothers, my friends in the Israeli army, I send you from my jail my regards and I miss you," said a text in Arabic on the wesbite.
