Palestinians blow up border wall with Egypt
<snip>

"Palestinian gunmen blew up a section of the border wall between the Gaza Strip and Egypt on Wednesday, witnesses said.

Residents of the southern Gaza town of Rafah said a series of explosions created large holes in the concrete wall that separates the Gaza Strip from Egypt.

More than a thousand Palestinians crossed freely into Egypt without facing interference from Egyptian policemen, the Rafah residents said."

<snip>

"Residents said members of Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees were among the gunmen who blew up the border wall.

Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri denied that Hamas was involved, but said: "It was impossible to prevent the bombing of the border" which reflected the huge pressures on Palestinians under closure in Gaza."

2. Thousands cross into Egypt from besieged Gaza
Palestinian gunmen set off several explosive devices along concrete wall dividing Palestinian and Egyptian Rafah. Thousands of Gaza residents enter Sinai, fleeing siege imposed on Strip by Israel. Egyptian authorities forced to open border; food and equipment begin pouring into Strip

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3497673,00.html

<snip>

"Palestinian gunmen affiliated with different organizations set off several explosive devices on Tuesday night along the concrete wall dividing the Palestinian and Egyptian Rafah, after the crossings between
Israel and the Gaza Strip were closed off.

Witnesses reported that thousands of Gaza's residents poured into the Sinai Peninsula early Wednesday through the breach created in the wall. Shortly afterwards, Egyptian authorities were forced to open the border.

The forced entry came just hours after a tense stand-off at the Rafah border crossing, where gunfire erupted after a group of Hamas demonstrators forced their way in through the closed crossing.

They had been protesting a months-long Israeli blockade of the impoverished territory that was tightened on Thursday and only partially lifted on Tuesday, with some fuel shipments being allowed in for the first time in four days.

Cries of despair and prayers were heard near the border Wednesday morning. Hamas officials said that the breached border was used to break the Israeli siege and bring food and medicines into the Strip."

Reports: Thousands Cross Gaza Wall

Wednesday January 23, 2008 6:46 AM

By IBRAHIM BARZAK

Associated Press Writer

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) - Masked gunmen blew holes in
the wall separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt early
Wednesday and thousands of Palestinians poured across
the border to buy supplies made scarce by an Israeli
blockade of the impoverished territory.

Egyptian guards and police from the militant group
Hamas, which rules Gaza, stood by without taking action.

Israel transferred fuel to restart Gaza's only electricity
plant Tuesday, easing its five-day blockade of the
Palestinian territory amid growing international concern
about a humanitarian crisis.

But before dawn the next day, Palestinian gunmen
began breaching the border wall dividing the town of
Rafah, which has a Gazan and an Egyptian side.

8. actually a brilliant move on all parts
The Egyptians will not fire on unarmed civillians, who apparently according to Egypt blew the wall themselves in desperation, Israel will be complaining that it is "terrorism" and that Egypt is allowing it, but the "terror" was against Egypt.

9. Egypt did fire on unarmed citizens
but let them through once the wall was blown up.

Actually, now that the gates are open, I hope Egypt will do the moral thing for their Arab brothers, and send in food, fuel and supplies. Since Egypt is not at war with Gaza, it is the right thing to do.

10. Hamas: Border must be controlled exclusively by Palestinians, Egypt
Hamas' Damascus-based political leader Khaled Meshal said Wednesday that his organization would be willing to work to resolve the chaotic situation on the Gaza-Egypt border, but only if the border were placed under exclusive Palestinian and Egyptian control.

Khaled Meshal's comments hours after militants blasted apart the metal wall dividing Egypt from Gaza, and tens of thousands of Palestinians poured into the Sinai Peninsula.

Meshal said Hamas was willing to work with Egypt and his rivals in the Palestinian Authority on bringing order to border area. "We in the Hamas movement and our brothers in the Palestinian government headed by Ismail Haniyeh declare our readiness to reach an understanding with the brothers in Ramallah and the brothers in Egypt on how to manage those crossings," the Meshal said at a Palestinian conference in the Syrian capital.

"The most important standard for lifting the siege on Gaza is that the Rafah crossing be opened and be purely under the Palestinians and Egyptians without any blackmail," he said.

11. The border should be under Palestininian and Egyptian control
and then when smuggled weapons are used against Israelis, there should be no crying about the swift response.

Cause----effect.

12. Yeah maybe Israel should start a war against Egypt
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 11:29 AM by azurnoir
that would be what they would be doing, not to worry that is doubtful. Or maybe rather than fighting back back either Egypt or Israel could economically boycott one another, I am sure not being able to sell petroleum to Israel will just break the bank in Egypt.:sarcasm:

27. You may have missed my point
When Hamas responds to some Israeli injustice with rocket attacks, do you then hold the same attitude - that there should be "no crying about the swift response" - towards Israeli victims?

14. I think it's becoming clearer to me why Egypt . .
. . has been so unsympathetic towards the Palestinians in Gaza. I have no doubts now that the Muslim Brotherhood sees this as a step toward embroiling Egypt in Gaza's jihad and eventully overthrowing Mubarik. Also, I think I now understand why the US gives so much military aid to Egypt. Egypt won't be occupying and annexing Gaza this time - it will be the other way around.

16. Egypt allows weapons to rush into Gaza
TEL AVIV – Egyptian security forces did not interfere as massive quantities of weapons were transported across the Egyptian border into the Gaza Strip when masked gunmen today blew dozens of holes in the wall delineating the frontier, according to Palestinian militant sources at the scene speaking to WND.

"Very good things came in (to Gaza)," said a senior leader of the Popular Resistance Committees, a Gaza-based, Hamas-allied terrorist group. The leader spoke on condition his name be withheld

"Egyptian security men at the border were very passive – they wanted this to happen; they didn't prevent anything from coming in or going out," said the terrorist, who was speaking from the Gaza side of the border.

Some 350,000 Palestinians reportedly poured out of Gaza and into Egypt today after masked men detonated 17 bombs, destroying some two-thirds of a wall separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt.

iran is one side...with Hizballa and the Palestinians....egypt and jordan will be siding with israel as will saudi arabia, quietly. Syrian, probably between iran and jordan.....

the losers of course will still be the Palestinians....
____

i guess now its pretty clear that there are no israelis on the border at Rafah...and i guess we will now see if the opening is now large enough to bring in aid (I've been told that rafah is too small....)

22. Do you think Mubarik . .
. . has the ability to stay in control of this? What happens if thousands of Egyptians start rioting and calling for his head? I know a lot of Egyptians will be shot but that is not much of a deterrent to fanatical rebellion, even in the west. It could require a lot of shooting.

he may lose the facade of a psuedo western oriented country...but then as jordan did to the Palestenains or what the syrians did to their own citizens in the city of hama...nobody will really think twice about it, if and when he has his own crackdown......

western human rights activists arent too active in non western countries.....they're some how not appreciated, and acting as human shields is not a long term prospect.

We will have to wait and see what Egypt does about that, and how long they wait to do it. In the meantime, it would appear that the Gazans can move anything they like back & forth. For instance one could see large imports of fertilizer and fuel oil now.
