Noisy protests begin at Rutgers
Several thousand demonstrators rallied at Rutgers University last night in support of Israel as about 100 pro-Palestine activists staged their own noisy demonstration nearby.

The "Israel Inspires" rally on the university's Busch campus in Piscataway was organized by area Jewish organizations in response to recent anti-Semitic incidents at Rutgers and a national pro-Palestine conference scheduled to begin today in North Brunswick.

Local Jewish organizations sent about 80 buses to the event filled with Israel supporters who ranged in age from young children to senior citizens. Rutgers officials estimated 5,000 to 7,000 people attended the two-hour event. Many waved Israeli flags, "Where ever we stand, we stand with ISRAEL" signs and "I am Israel" balloons.

As they filed into the rally, the pro-Israel demonstrators passed a group of about 100 counterprotesters chanting "Free, free Palestine" and "Long live the intifada" and waving "Palestine will be free from sea to sea" and "Israel Inspires Terror" signs.

The pro-Palestine group, made up of a mix of young Arab-Americans and college activists, was kept behind police barricades across the street from the entrance to the event

"Long live the intifada". As feared, a small, pathetic group of terrorist sympathizers sought to disrupt the thousands that came to support little Israel. Oh, my.

4. How dare you
Your comment is offensive and borderline anti-semitic. Apologize.

16. You want to explain this?
I'm not hitting alert yet because I assume there's some context to this comment and it's not just something as vile and generic as "Jews are filthy and stink." Please explain what I'm not seeing in this.

18. There's a bit of context.
The person I was replying to has in the past made derogatory comments about the way Arabs smell. I thought it funny he would demand apologies from others when he too has made comments that were offensive. Sorry for the confusion.

21. I was hoping there was context
I have not seen these comments from that poster and I will take you at your word that he said them. I would have preferred that you not respond to a smear in a like manner, but at least your response was understandable in light of what was apparently said in the past.

17. You really don't get it?
It's yet another version of the ever popular "the Holocaust was so two generations ago ... when will those whining Jews get over it?" and "if the Jews would just quit their bellyaching and paranoia everything would be fine."

And if you STILL don't see what's anti-semitic about that, perhaps you should get out of Humboldt County for a while.

5. little Israel is a giant in this country...
...dissent in favor of Palestinians is squashed at every level. Hurray for the pro-palestine activists! I'm sure they are up against all kinds of obstacles.

They are not "terrorist sympathizers" - they are anti-apartheid activists.

8. all go to their corners and foreswear hateful rhetoric...
it doesn't help. I understand the anger/emotions on all sides. this place, however, is a forum for reason and respectful dialogue, no matter how ardent the posters.

having said that, the 'get off the cross' comment is probably the most offensive, classless and grossly inappropriate statement I've seen in ages.

It's more than insulting. I believe it IS Jew-baiting and brushes right up alongside that old "Jews as Christ-killers" canard.

Stop it, willya?

15. WhatEVER they shouted
it beats leaving anonymous bomb threats on the answering machine of a Palestinian supporter (as happened here at Berkeley).

Please tell me what slogan YOU think young Arab-Americans should shout in such a situation - "All hail nuclear-armed little Israel" ? Or should they just keep their mouths shut ?

But that wouldn't be right now would it....

25. Then today
the majority of you live in Jordan and should fight for democracy there.

Oh wait, you tried that and more people were killed in one month than in the entire history of the occupation. But thats different cuz no Jews were involved.

30. Locking
Per I/P guidelines:

Don't make over-sweeping or stereotypical generalizations of any group or individual.

Support of Palestinian Nationalism does not equal support of terrorism.

As feared, a small, pathetic group of terrorist sympathizers sought to disrupt the thousands that came to support little Israel. Oh, my.
