Ticking bomb

What made a young lawyer from Jenin enter a packed restaurant and blow herself up, killing 20 people and wounding dozens of others? The story of Hanadi Jaradat, the bomber from Maxim restaurant in Haifa, combines a tough family situation, religious zealotry - and revenge.

Four months ago, Hanadi Jaradat stood over the freshly dug grave of her brother Fadi and vowed to avenge his death. "Your blood will not have been shed in vain," she is quoted as saying by the Jordanian daily Al-Arab al-Yum. "The murderer will yet pay the price and we will not be the only ones who are crying." Weeping bitterly, she added: "If our nation cannot realize its dream and the goals of the victims, and live in freedom and dignity, then let the whole world be erased."

Two weeks ago, Jaradat made good on her terrible promise. She erased the world of dozens of Israeli men, women, children and infants, and many people are indeed crying: the Zer Aviv family, the Almog family, and all the relatives and friends of the dead and the wounded from the terrorist attack at the Maxim restaurant in Haifa. Once again the question arises: What makes a 29-year-old lawyer, an educated woman with a good salary whose whole life was ahead of her, enter a packed restaurant at 2 P.M. on a Saturday and blow herself up with the sole purpose of killing as many total strangers as possible, none of whom had ever done anything to her?

It is disappointing to see a piece rationalizing terror in a fine paper. Look at the irony. This person offers aid and comfort to terrorists. The IDF spares her life. She shows no gratitutde. Rather she commits more of the very terror that led to the elimination of her relatives. If the family continues down this road, more will die. And the killer's father would like to be congratulated. Oh, my.

The IDF "spares" here life?!? It didn't spare the life of two of her relatives and she should show gratitude for that! No wonder people get desperate and see no meaning of living when you have many of your closest relatives killed... And then you wonder...

So many lives spared by the Most Humanitarian Army in the World, and still all they do is whine about malnutrition!

It is done a 1000 times an hour. I my self am not a revengful person but I must say I must talk my self out of it at times and I have never had those reasons.It is not easy to say you would not ever do something in some frames of mind.I am sure this is as old as the history of man.It is so old that the Bible even speaks that only God has the right.We our selfs are doing it in the name of our gov. How many have we killed in these countries that did nothing to anyone and yet we claim in the name of 911 we have every right to kill who we wish?

and put her family at risk. I would hope this father could realize the danger awaiting those condoning and aiding terrorism. More deaths in the family would be unfortunate.

Unfortunate is all you can come up with? If I said it was unfortunate that Israeli civilians were killed by a suicide bomber some would be screaming that isn't condemning enough...

It wasn't misfortune, it was clear intent that they were killed!

In other words, every man in the world has been spared by the US> They haven't nuked the world yet.

"Spared" should only apply to one who is guilty.

That can only mean that they are all guilty by birth for being born Palestinians...

it does a fine job of showing how Israeli incursions can encourage suicide bombings.

For Loyal: That doesn't make them justified. They are still despicable acts of terrorism against innocent people.

but I would expect that more of this sort of "generosity"
will naturally lead to more off this sort of "ingratitude".

I am not aware of any national liberation movement in modern history that has not succeeded in the long run, no matter what the odds.

Israel will learn the hard way, but they will learn.

Glorifying murder has become the norm, murder is considered a blessing because the PA inculcates this philosophy in children.


A Palestinian soccer tournament for 12-year-old boys has been named after the suicide bomber who killed 29 Jews during Passover Seder. The suicide bomber's brother has been chosen to present the trophy to the winning team. All seven teams participating in the tournament are named after terrorists and others who the PA refers to as Shahids - those having died for Allah.

Saying that it's all the Palestinians' fault because they (or, rather, their "culture") glorify murder is unfair.

There are problems on both sides, certainly. The thing that Ms. Rini references, however, does make a real contribution to the problem, particularly in increasing the exposure of children to gun-fire, and in recruitment to mlitant organizations. Young boys especially are rather prone to dreams of glory, after all....

what bothers me is the way it is advertised as the single cause of the suicide bombings, the root of all evil when it comes to the I/P conflict.

Young boys would not see the the suicide bombers as glorious if they did not have to endure what they do endure in the Occupied Territories.

Of course, they probably wouldn't have to endure what they do endure if the various militant organizations stopped all attacks. It appears to be a cycle that shall not end anytime soon...
