Calls for Israel to end its attacks on Gaza have intensified around the world, but Mr Bolton insisted that Israel is acting out of self-defence.
"I think that they should let Israel finish what it plans to do to Hamas because I think sometimes in military struggles, there ought to be a winner and a loser," he said.
Mr Bolton, who served under the Bush administration, made the comments at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Hong Kong.
"I think given that Hamas' fundamental reason for being is the destruction of Israel, they are not going to negotiate a ceasefire that will last any longer than it takes for Hamas to get its hands on more rockets," he added.
However, in terms of clamping down on North Korea's nuclear ambitions, Mr Bolton admitted that the Bush administration had failed.
"I don't think there's anything that we could offer Kim Jong-Il that will get him, in an honest way, to give up his nuclear weapons programme," he admitted.
