Sad Days in Israel - How have the Mighty Fallen
Mainly for the excerpt.

---

It is sad in Israel. Ten soldiers have died thus far. Two IDF officers and one soldier were killed during operations today, one soldier severely wounded, one soldier was moderately wounded and 11 soldiers were lightly wounded. The dead will be brought to rest tomorrow.

Yesterday another soldier was brought to rest. 21 year old Alexander Masheviski, full of life and laughter, is now buried in Beer Sheva, the capital of the Negev. He was part of Israel Ground Forces Combat Engineering Special Operations Yahalom (Diamond) Unit. Less than a month ago I had the privilege of visiting with the commanders and soldiers of Yahalom. Their readiness level, knowledge and expertise and devotion to the task were enhanced only by their commanding officer constant reminder: Remember who we are, remember for what we fight.

Israel mourns the fallen soldiers: pictures of smiling young men who gave their lives willingly in defense of the country. Young men at the prime of their youth, gone one by one fighting one of the most merciless of enemies humanity has ever known. "Swifter of Eagles, Stronger than Lions"- (Samuel II, 1:23) they went to the task to protect their country, their family and friends, you and me. Why did they have to die? Why does the world not understand Israel's fight is its own fight?

6. Touching, yeah.
Apparently purple prose is not an ethnic trait. But two dead officers and one dead soldier seemed relevant to me. One wonders how that occurred.

9. This sentence:
"Two IDF officers and one soldier were killed during operations today, one soldier severely wounded, one soldier was moderately wounded and 11 soldiers were lightly wounded."

I'm guessing that was from the action last night.

11. My brain fuzzes in and out these days too.
Information overload.

My favorite blonde joke:

From: xxxxxxxx
To: xxxxxxxxx
Date: Sun, 18 Oct 1998 17:48:06 -0700
Subject: Blonds are not as dumb as lawyers

A lawyer and a blonde woman are sitting next to each other
on a long flight from LA to NY. The lawyer leans over to
her, and asks if she would like to play a fun game. The
blonde is tired, and just wants to take a nap, so she
politely declines, and rolls over to the window to catch a
few winks. The lawyer persists, saying that the game is
really easy and a lot of fun.

He explains how the game works: "I ask you a question, and,
if you don't know the answer, you pay me, and vice-versa."

Again, she politely declines, and tries to get some sleep.

The chauvinistic lawyer figures that, since his opponent
is a blonde, he will easily win the match, so he makes
another offer:

"Okay, how about this: "If you don't know the answer, you
pay me only $5, but, if I don't know the answer, I will pay
you $50."

This catches the blonde's attention, and, figuring that
there will be no end to this torment unless she plays,
she agrees to play the game.

The lawyer asks the first question: "What's the distance
from the earth to the moon?"

The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches in to her purse,
pulls out a five-dollar bill, and hands it to the lawyer.

Now, it's the blonde's turn. She asks the lawyer, "What goes
up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?"

The lawyer looks at her with a puzzled look. He takes out
his laptop computer and searches all his references. He
taps into the Airphone with his modem and searches the Net
and even the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he sends
e-mails to all his co-workers and friends he knows. All to
no avail.

After over an hour of searching for the answer, he finally
gives up. He wakes the blonde and hands her $50.

The blonde politely takes the $50 and turns away to get
back to sleep.

The lawyer, who is more than a little frustrated, wakes the
blonde and asks, "Well, so what IS the answer?"

Again without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse,
hands the lawyer $5, and goes back to sleep.

7. In deed they did, though it was minor compared to what Israel did later
Its was also a hudna, not a true ceasefire. Difference is crucial in the eyes of Hamas and other Islamists

2. The world mourns the fallen children:
pictures of bloodied infants, parts of their bodies missing, these young ones who gave their lives most unwillingly not in defense of anything--they are sacrifices on the altar of endless war which is perpetrated by politicians on both sides who see in the deaths of these their power to intimidate and destroy.
