Brown Says Israel Killed Too Many Civilians in Gaza Attacks
<snip>

"U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown criticized Israel’s conduct during attacks on the Gaza Strip over the past three weeks that have left more than 1,000 Palestinians dead.

He called on Israel, which late yesterday announced a cease- fire, to re-open crossings into Gaza, offering in return Royal Navy assistance in stopping smugglers selling arms to Hamas, which has been firing rockets into Israel.

“Too many innocent civilians, including hundreds of children, have been killed during the military offensive,” Brown said. “Israel must allow full access to humanitarian workers. We must also end Gaza’s economic isolation by reopening the crossings.”

Brown, speaking to reporters while traveling to Sharm el- Shiek, Egypt, for a peace conference, singled out for praise the “courageous and valuable” work of the United Nations in the region. UN facilities were attacked by the Israeli Defense Forces several times during the conflict.

In Egypt Brown is meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicholas Sarkozy and other European leaders. He said he’ll push for renewed efforts for a permanent settlement in the Middle East."

7. I'm no great fan of Brown...
but why do you think he's a fucking asshole on this point? Because he failed to rebel against Blair on Iraq and other wars?

3. Gordon Brown has some nerve
With the UK's involvement in hundreds of thousands of dead civilians in Kosovo/Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan - who is this clown to criticize Israel?

Not one UK citizen was under threat from the govts of Yugoslavia, Iraq, or Afghanistan.

At least Israel can point to 300 rockets Christmas week threatening over half a million Israeli citizens. What's Brown's excuse?

6. I agree on both points
To be fair on Brown, he is not himself a warmongering type, and I don't think he would have chosen to go into Iraq or Afghanistan. However, it's perfectly true that he chose his political career over rebelling against Blair on these points; and it does undermine his authority to speak about other countries now. Nonetheless I do agree with him on this particular occasion.

9. You would probably rationalize Israel nuking Gaza or the West Bank, or even Iran
:puke:

As to Gordon Brown, he chose to follow Tony Blair's lead of being America's subservient lapdog. Brown didn't lift a finger to help stop the Gaza slaughter.
