Gaza rocket hits Ashkelon, Israel files complaint with UN
Palestinian militants fired a rocket into the southern city of Ashkelon from the Gaza Strip Monday evening. No one was hurt and no damage was caused in the attack.

In light of the ongoing rocket fire from Gaza this week, the parents' association of the Ashkelon school system announced that they would shut down area schools, as the buildings are not properly fortified against rocket attacks.

The parents said that they would go to the schools and physically prevent students from entering the buildings, Israel Radio reported.

Meanwhile, Israel filed an official complaint with the United Nations on Monday over the continuing rocket fire.

1. Is this the anti-semetic/anti-Israel kingpin UN?
Or is this a different organization?

but now look to them as their savior! How refreshing.

When the UN does next to nothing, Israel will then claim they have no other recourse but to do some more heavy damage to Hamas, but this time under Bibi.

11. I don't think Israel needs any more pretext in their minds to justify another operation
Do you? They can air raid Gaza all they'd like, because it doesn't get reported in the media, but when a rocket lands next to a kindergarten in Ashkelon, its all over DU... that makes me very sad that Palestinian deaths and injuries means less than Israeli's being treated for shock :(

12. Israeli raids in Gaza don't get media attention?
Are you serious? What media do you get? Because the conflict in Gaza has been pretty well covered in the media I've been reading.

You really seem to be downplaying the fact that rockets are still being launched from Gaza. Is it really your opinion that Israelis are concerned because they fear the dangers of shock?

I don't think Israel needs any more pretext in their minds to justify another operation

Because in their twisted minds, Israelis actually consider these increasingly sophisticated rockets landing in their cities and schoolyards to be justification for a response. So if refraining from taking any action doesn't work, and then warning the militants doesn't work, and then filing a complaint with the UN doesn't work, they might actually consider launching another operation intended to stop the rockets from being launched against their civilians.

It's almost as if those Israelis are placing the lives of their own citizens above those of the nation that's been attacking it! The fiends! Clearly they should opt for the obvious alternative instead... you know the one... um, what was that again?

17. No, the air raids don't get cover in American media.
Have you heard how many times the Israeli military has broken their own cease-fire since January 17th? Probably not, but every rocket attack is publicized extensively.

9. It no longer surprises me...
Good thing the poster was aiming that comment at Gaza. If they'd suggested doing that to Tel Aviv or Askelon, the post would have been swiftly deleted, but not after a barrage of outraged posts from folk who only seem to get outraged when that sort of ugly sentiment is aimed at Israelis, not Palestinians....

I'd like to ask duckhunter whether in their opinion levelling Gaza should happen after the population has been ethnically cleansed, or whether it's more humane and left-wing to just level people's homes with them inside...

13. Good point.
The comment was made to me last night "What if we woke up in the morning and the Israelis were under siege in Gaza, and the Palestinians were dropping Iranian/Chinese/Russian bombs on them?"

I think we all know the answer.

Double standards again.

20. OK
The question posed:

"What if we woke up in the morning and the Israelis were under siege in Gaza, and the Palestinians were dropping Iranian/Chinese/Russian bombs on them?"

The included response

"I think we all know the answer."

The scenario hits a little closer to home for me which is probably what prompted a response.

Many in Israel are only a generation or two removed from people who did wake up one morning to find themselves under seige and facing even worse horrors.

And the answer was that most of the world did not give much of a shit.

That's part of the reason why Israel has such a fuck-the-world attitude today I dare suggest.

40. Glad to hear what? That I alert on bigoted posts, no matter who the bigotry is aimed at?
And I have no idea as to why when I alerted nothing happened. I could annoy the mods and ask, but seeing as how I wouldn't probably get a reply to my question and it'd be wasting their time, why bother?

I didn't ask you why you respond to some posts and let others go. I asked you about this specific example of a hateful post advocating the flattening of Gaza and why you didn't express a single word of opposition to it, even though when similar things have been posted aimed at Israel, you've been there consistantly voicing yr opposition. You must have some idea as to why one elicits silence from you and the other doesn't. I'd like to think that most people in this forum are find bigotry and hate equally repellent no matter who it's aimed at, but given yr 'I don't know' response, I'm not as confident as I used to be of that...

the excuse that you were yourself beaten as a child does not make your actions any less wrong. Also, I don't remember seeing WWII photos of arabs in nazi uniforms, around the warsaw ghetto or anywhere else.

How about the native americans start kicking land-owners off their property? How long would that last?

31. No, I did not
Just to point out, seeing as thoug you like irony so much, I compared the siege of gaza to the warsaw ghetto on this board before and the usual suspects got their knickers in a twist.

Anyways the fact is the people of gaza or the palestinians were not responsible for the warsaw ghetto or the halocaust, and to attempt to excuse or explain israels behaviour towards the gazans by historic means is as disgusting as excusing the million dead in Iraq because '9/11 changed everything'.

34. I would encourage you to read more about Raschid Ali and Muhamed Al-Husayni
Apologies if my previous retort was snarky, but I would encourage you to learn more about the role of those and other prominent Arab leaders in the Nazi Holocaust if you are curious.

To clarify, I am not implying that the people of Gaza or any present day Palestinians were responsible for the Warsaw Ghetto or that any of Israel's behavior today can be justified by those past events.

The only response I was making was in response to the hypothetical what-if scenario you propose.

The point being, that an even worse scenario actually did occur and the response from the world community was underwhelming to say the least.

whoever was killed before the US to come to the rescue of the Israelis and blew the hell out of the palestinians, and took heaven knows what actions against the suppliers of the ordinance.

There is of course the fact that the palestinians wouldn't drop 100's of tons of ordinance on the israelis in the first place, knowing the worlds only superpower would decimate them. Its the fact that Israel has no such worry that gives them the green card to commit these crimes against humanity.

The double standard is my point.

30. US has never come to the rescue of the Israelis or taken any military action against Palestinians
Hamas has massacred Israeli civilians several times throughout the early part of this decade and the US took no military action in response.

This is in spite of the fact that several Americans have been killed by some of those Hamas attacks.

Apparently, a CIA analyst I watched yesterday said this several times was the reason we went into Iraq.

18. The age of nepotism
Current situation in the Middle East is very unstable and alarming. Politicians of the region, as always, seem to have no realistic ideas as to how the conflicts can be solved. What concerns the most are inhuman conditions that people are living in. Humanitarian aid for the Gazans seems to be constantly delayed while people are being deprived of basic supplies of food and water. The aid that actually comes to the needy is not even close to securing them a normal nutrition. And that is only one aspect that generates a normal living. Recovering of Gaza's infrastructure will take years, but will Gazans ever recover from the loss of innocent lives? They have lost their homes, and schools, clinics, factories and businesses have been destroyed. I recommend you to read a book called The Age of Nepotism which talks about this and many other world's issues. The author Vahid Razavi speaks for those who are subjected to injustice and cruelty, as he speaks of how the conflicts between neighbors occur and how we can all work on successfully avoiding them in the future. You can also check out the site www.theageofnepotism.com
