Turkey drops Gaza 'war crimes' probe
A crisis in Turkey-Israel relations that began when Israel bombed the Gaza Strip in the beginning of Operation Cast Lead in late December 2008 has come to an end: A Turkish prosecutor dropped an investigation into Turkish allegations that Israel committed genocide and crimes against humanity during the operation, AFP quoted a Turkish news agency as reporting Thursday.

The prosecutor said there were no grounds for prosecution after the Justice Ministry refused it permission to bring charges, the report said.

Turkish law allows trying people for genocide or crimes against humanity even if the crimes were committed outside Turkey, but prosecutors need permission from the Turkish Justice Ministry before serving indictments.

The investigation was launched in February following a complaint by the human rights association Mazlum-Der, which accused Israel of carrying out "direct attacks on civilians with the aim of annihilating them."

"direct attacks on civilians" has of yet to be proved and considering Turkeys history WRT Armenia this was perhaps a wise move, however Turkey has taken other actions that speak just as loudly

Turkey, Syria conduct military drill

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- The Turkish military said it launched a joint drill with Syrian soldiers on their shared border Monday in order to improve security. Israel, an ally of Turkey and a longtime foe of Syria, expressed concern.

Military teams from Turkey and Syria were scheduled to cross the border and visit outposts during the three-day exercises, the Turkish military said. It described the drill as the "first-ever" between the countries.

2. Israel "troubled" by Turkish-Syrian military drill
JERUSALEM, April 27 (Reuters) - Israel is troubled by an unprecedented military exercise between its ally, Turkey, and its arch-foe Syria, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Monday.

Ankara announced on Sunday it would hold its first drill with Syria this week, using ground forces in a border area that has been the focus of a 25-year conflict between Turkey and separatist Kurdish rebels.

Israel has extensive defence ties to Turkey, a NATO member and among the few Muslim nations to have built an alliance with the Jewish state. The Israeli and Turkish air forces and navies have held joint exercises.

"Today we see a Syrian-Turkish drill, which is certainly a troubling development," Barak told reporters. "But I believe that the strategic ties between Israel and Turkey will overcome even Turkey's need to take part in this drill." (Writing by Dan Williams; Editing by Charles Dick)
