Democrats to Obama: Ease pressure on Israel

Democrats express concern over Obama administration's pressure on Jewish State

WASHINGTON – As Barack Obama prepares for his trip to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, Democratic Congress members are expressing concern over the pressure exerted by the president on Israel, the Politics website reported.

According to the report, the Congress members asked Obama to moderate his pressure on the settlement freeze issue.

“My concern is that we are applying pressure to the wrong party in this dispute,” Politico quoted Rep. Shelley Berkley as saying. “I think it would serve America’s interest better if we were pressuring the Iranians to eliminate the potential of a nuclear threat from Iran, and less time pressuring our allies and the only democracy in the Middle East to stop the natural growth of their settlements.”

Politico reported that other representatives expressed similar sentiments in respect to Obama and Israel. Rep. Anthony Weiner, for example, said he would have liked to see President Obama pay more attention in his remarks to the Palestinian pledge to fight terrorism.

“There’s a line between articulating US policy and seeming to be pressuring a democracy on what are their domestic policies, and the president is tiptoeing right up to that line," Weiner said.

Rep. Gary Ackerman reiterated the same point, saying he did not think "anybody wants to dictate to an ally what they have to do in their own national security interests."

-----

I think this is the worst news possible on the Middle East front. US pressure on Israel to make concessions against its will is the only hope for peace; I think that Berkley and his ilk probably have enough clout to stop it.

3. I hope he doesn't listen
This part really bothered me:

“My concern is that we are applying pressure to the wrong party in this dispute,” Politico quoted Rep. Shelley Berkley as saying.

That's debatable and I don't think there are "right" or "wrong" parties involved in the middle east conflict. But even so, sometimes the right party sucks it up and makes concessions first to show they are willing to compromise in order to achieve peace.

4. Pressuring Israel over illegal settlements is where I support Obama on this
I've been hard on him for staffing his economic team with Wall Street rogues, but in regards to Israel and allowing them to get away with building settlements on Palestinian land I support Obama 100% on this issue. Please don't cave to the AIPAC slaves in Congress, Obama.

7. To make what this article states e a bit clearer
Edited on Wed Jun-03-09 12:21 AM by azurnoir
at present there are 435 Congressional members of which 256 are Democrats the article names 3, as time goes on and the 2010 midterm election approaches we'll see how this pans out
ETA the proIsrael lobbies do not direct contributions to one party over another they direct towards the party that promotes Israels interests or what is felt to be Israels interests usually termed Americas security on their agenda, what makes the current situation interesting is that President Obama has said that the settlements are a danger to Americas serurity as well as Israel's

10. you'd vote them out due to this one issue?
Edited on Wed Jun-03-09 06:03 AM by shira
isn't that like the argument (but in reverse) that anti-zionists use against Jewish American supporters of Israel who are one-issue (what is best for Israel) voters?

11. I was posting an explanation, not an aurgument
none of them were my Congress people anyway, if your asking whether or not I would have voted Republican over this no I would not have
BTW I checked the Congress people from my state none of them including mine list Pro-Israel lobbies as major contributors not even the two most well known Michelle Bachmann or Keith Ellison

9. What I noticed in the open secrets
lists is that all 3 also have real estate on the list of 5 top contributers, seeing as how the list is from 2007-2008 that is hardly a surprize.
I did not use the 2009-2010 list because it is too soon for that be anywhere near complete
