Netanyahu convinced Obama seeks clash with Israel to appease Arabs
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes that U.S. President Barack Obama wants a confrontation with Israel, based on Obama's speech in Cairo last week, Netanyahu's confidants say.

In Netanyahu's opinion, the Americans believe an open controversy with Israel would serve the Obama administration's main objective of improving U.S. relations with the Arab world, the aides say.

...

Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who visited Washington last week, says the Obama administration has no personal problem with Netanyahu and that the Americans do not not seek to undermine the Israeli coalition and topple the government.

Barak says Obama's positions are guided by strategic considerations - he has undertaken to withdraw from Iraq and is striving to end the war in Afghanistan and needs the moderate Arab states' support. This, rather than "political persecution," is behind the administration's attitude toward Israel, he says.

More indications that Obama's settlements statements are less about actually influencing Israeli policy and more about improving U.S. relations with Arab governments alienated by Bush by publicly distancing himself from Israel.

2. More Bibi bullshit! Obama wants peace, and we must support him!
Bibi prefers an AWOL President like Bush to be in office, or one of the many of Bush's predecessors that gave a wink-and-a-nod to settlement expansion on West Bank while keeping a public posture of opposition.

6. Typical conservative tactic--set up straq man (situation) making
yourself the victim and your opposition the bad guy.

Playing to American Audience as well as home audience.

Its America seeking a clash with Israel ah thanks for setting us straight, but Israel is free to seek other allies if it feels America has become too friendly with Arabs, who know maybe China will back them up.

15. I'm afraid I think you're wrong on both counts.
Bibi and the hard right are very much in control in Israel, and it will not be possible to force them to make peace.

16. I think he's right on the first count; don't know about the second
Bibi's coalition is very fragile, and it's anyone's guess whether he'll be in charge in a year's time.

As regards forcing them to make peace - it's going to be difficult to persuade the leadership on either side to do so at present, but I think that the power America's purse-strings may succeed here. Yes, you could say it's a form of bribery, or even of de facto colonialism; but if it works for peace, it's worth it!

18. "More indications"? It's someone's opinion. That's not an 'indication' of anything.
