Israel complains to UN over Kassams
Israel's ambassador to the UN Gabriela Shalev lodged a complaint with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday, regarding a rise in terrorist attacks from the Gaza Strip in the last month.

She said that Palestinians had launched some 13 Kassam rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel throughout the month of September. Many attempts to plant bombs along the Gaza border were foiled by IDF troops, she added.

Shalev's complaint came after the IAF carried out two airstrikes in Gaza overnight Friday, in response to Kassam fire on the western Negev earlier in the day.

Planes attacked a northern Gaza building which the army said was being used to manufacture weapons, as well as two tunnels along the southern border with Egypt near Rafah, which were being used to smuggle weapons.

5. And ongoing. Note how the usual suspects duck a truthful thread the way Superman avoids Kryptonite.

6. Sorry, but that's totally incorrect...
While that sort of outright falsehood is predictable from others in this thread, it is not true at all that there's silence about rocket attacks on Sderot at DU. I know that I for one have said many times that I'm opposed to them and I've seen others say similar things. I can go back and dig up links to prove it too. What Jimbo is complaining about isn't that there's a supposed 'silence' about rocket attacks on Sderot, but that DUers dare to not be silent when it comes to Israeli attacks on Palestinians, or even that they don't do what Jimbo does, which is unreservedly praise Israel for its attacks.

7. I don't praise Israel for attacks.
I think on many occasions they have the right to respond. I take issue with the trend of many posters (I'm not saying you or all posters) of minimizing or ignoring Hamas attacks on Israel. "Firecrackers" and all that. I would be interesting to dug up the old posts and compare the reactions to Hamas attacking Sderot and Israel attacking Gaza.

I think DU can be one-sided on this. Just like I'm sure FR is one-sided on the other side of the coin.

8. I know you don't, but there's others that do...
Israel of course has the right to respond to violations of its sovereignty - it's the way in which it does so that I object to as they're OTT and cause so much death and destruction to ordinary Palestinians in Gaza...

While I do believe there's blame to go around for all parties when it comes to this conflict, when it comes to reactions to attacks by Israel on Gaza and rocket attacks on and around Sderot, I'd find it a bit strange if there was some carefully balanced equal time thing for both. I know that I find there's not a lot to say about rocket attacks from Gaza, apart from the obvious things like I totally oppose them and stating that I really don't have much of an idea how to stop them. When it comes to OCL, there's a whole lot more to say because unlike rocket attacks on Israel, there are attempts to blame those being attacked for the attacks, there's denial of what happened, there's a vastly huger amount of death and destruction, and there's also people here at DU who justify OCL and don't think Israel should be criticised at all for what it did. Of course when you look at those factors, it's clear why there's more discussion about OCL than about rocket attacks launched from Gaza into Israel, though of course the poster you applied to further up wasn't claiming an imbalance, but insisting there's actual silence at DU, which there isn't...

13. Goldstone tells Sderot: Probe did not ignore rocket terror
---

"Dear Mayor Buskila,

I acknowledge with thanks your letter of 1 October 2009. If you have read our report you will see that:

1. We set out the details and an analysis of the terror that the firing of rockets and mortars from the Gaza Strip caused to the people of Southern Israel including Sderot and especially to the children.

2. We stated that the firing of rockets and mortars at civilian targets in Southern Israel constituted serious war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity.

3. The members of the Mission wished to visit Southern Israel and especially Sderot but permission for such a visit was not agreed to by the Government of Israel.

I fully share you hope that peace will come your region and when I next visit Israel I would like to accept your invitation to visit Sderot.

With my best wishes for the New Year,

Richard Goldstone"

9. No time to read those when
you spend all your time demonizing Israel....the real task of the UN it seems.

...Iraq and Afghanistan.

Check out Goldstone's remarks on US troops and their civilian casualties which are 100x higher than Israel...
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2009/09/30/amanpour.richard.goldstone.int.cnn

And also Goldstone's judgment 10 years ago vs. NATO (see paragraphs #71-77)...
http://www.icty.org/sid/10052#IVB3

Realize that now Goldstone is accusing Israel of targetting civilians (the same exact charge as 10 years ago in the report above) but note the contrast in tone, context, and judgment - what he does not afford to Israel (insisting instead on ignoring Hamas illegal shielding).

==========

It's nothing but demonization, paid for by the Oil Lobby.

My bet is that Goldstone's chances of becoming secretary general of the UN are better now that he issued this vicious report.

There's politics for you.
