UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and
Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near
East, is to drastically cut its relief activities
in Gaza, despite the growing distress of the local
population caused by Israeli military operations
there.
UNRWA has already slashed
allocations to needy families
in the territories, even as
the Palestinians' economic
plight becomes more acute,
according to a document the
agency distributed on
Tuesday.
"The frequency of the military operations in
Rafah has caused a rise in the mental stress
and trauma among the local population," Hansen
said. "The dominant feeling among the residents
is fear."
He said IDF operations, restrictions on
Palestinian movement, and barring them from
work in Israel have destroyed a considerable
part of the Palestinians' economy. "More than
60 percent of the Gaza and West Bank
populations are forced to subsist on $2 a day.
In some regions 25 percent of children suffer
from malnutrition."
