Sharon's Noose

...The American and Israeli press, have done their job, as they always do,
implementing the rhetoric of the state. The wall has morphed into the
“security fence”, suggesting a rambling picket affair that makes for better
neighbors. No mention of the looming giant that destroys everything in its
path and transforms Palestine into a penal colony. No mention of the 75,000
people who are displaced from their land and orchards and even their water
to accommodate this new reality. No mention of the noose, woven from
generations of ethnic hatred that is tightening around Palestinian society.
This is Sharon’s noose, but it was bought and paid for in the USA.
Perhaps, we should stipulate on our tax forms how much of our contribution
we want to go towards ethnic cleansing.

There are no crimes anymore. Every act of barbarity is pardonable under
the rubric of “National Security”. Sharon knows this, as does Bush.
Collective punishment, targeted assassinations, torture, even bombing
civilian areas are all morally justified under this new ethic. The standard
operating procedure is simply to get on with the beatings and the killings
and the confiscations and let the battery of media-mercenaries clean up the
mess. After all, that’s what Tom Friedman and William Saffire get paid for.
(In a recent article Friedman made his case against the wall on the grounds
that it would eventually hurt the long-range, “ethnic purity” goals of
Israel....In an era when aggression is dismissed as preemption, and quashing human rights or civil liberties is vindicated as fighting terrorism, it’s only
fitting that an edifice that is twice the height of the Berlin wall, and
partitions 3 million people into de facto reservations, would be called “a
fence”....Each block is one people looking into the eyes of the other and saying, “I will built you a prison, and leave you there to rot or die”.

And so, the wall becomes the unavoidable symbol of our times, an
inexorable cleaver that sets religion against religion, race against race,
man against man. This is the world being designed for us compliments of the
Bush-Sharon alliance, the New World Order.

Humanity, as well as common decency, requires that we take our place inside
the wall with those who are suffering as the struggle continues.
