Suicide attacks at Istanbul synagogues; 15 killed
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1068880710672

Two synagogues were bombed in Istanbul Saturday morning, killing 16 people, Turkey's Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu announced, and an additional 143 people were wounded.

Two cars exploded simultaneously at about 9:30am at Nevei Shalom Synagogue, the city's largest, and at Beth Israel Synagogue in the affluent district of Shishli about three miles away.

Most of the fatalities appear to be from the Nevei Shalom attack. Previous reports had put the death toll as high as 24. Among the dead are a policeman and a security officer, the interior minister said.

The minister also corrected reports that the Great Eastern Islamic Raiders' Front claimed responsibility. He said that no group has claimed responsibility.

Security is extremely tight around the synagogues. In 1986, Nevei Shalom was the site of a Palestinian terror attack that in which 22 worshippers were killed. Many of the dead in this attack appear to be passersby outside the synagogues rather than worshippers inside, CNN reported.

am i glad that anti-semitism is dead...

4. I will not argue that...
point. But the indisputable fact is that violent acts such as this have been on the rise by both terrorists and governments since the bush admin has displayed their arrogance and doctrine of pre-emption.

25. Not a cause-effect
The 9/11 events, following a decade long increase in attacks on US targets in Africa and the Middle East. Is a laissez-faire attitude, wait-until-they-strike defense going to make anyone feel safe? Too bad they didn't catch the bombers before the struck. They might have detonated them, killing only the attackers. Wouldn't that have been a better move?

6. Radical Islam
is a growing menace to both Islamic countries and non-Islamic countries. I pray the horror of people being murdered at prayer (Saturday is the Jewish Shabat) will cause moderate Muslems join hand with western countries to stop these murderers in their tracks!

13. If I knew
I'd be famous! I leave the details to others. However, even in my ignorance I do think perhaps, world wide condemnation, jail, cutting off all funding might help

14. Well...
I, too, want a stop to violence directed against innocent civilians, whoever does it. However, the way to stop it is not the way Israel or the US all too often tries to stop it which is by inflicting MORE harm on innocent civilians.

I could write a long essay on what I would do to stop it. I'm not in the mood right now, though that may change if Bush* does another stupid thing in relation to Iraq and/or Afghanistan n the name of "fighting terrorism."

stopping such actions - I used Israel as an example.

This being I/P and not LBN, I don't see why you care.

26. Why I care
I think there is a strong tendency to rationalize anti-Semitic behavior into "anti-Zionist" behavior. I think most of the attacks on Jews throughout the world fall into the former category and have nothing to do with Israel. Simply put, a lot of people around the world hate Jews. To link this even in passing with Israel becomes a defense for such despicable behavior.

21. A synagogie was targeted...and the poster referenced....
A view that "Anti-semitism" is dead--which no one here either believes or (so far as I can recall) says.

I would guess that the perps in this case had both anti-Jewish and anti-Israel motives, although their goal was probably to attack the secular government of Turkey.

In any case, this was a horrible thing to wake up to---and its is alarming and sad to see these attacks continuing in Turkey.

8. JPost has been updated...
According to it, 17 are dead: Seventeen people were killed and 257 wounded in bombings of two Istanbul synagogues on Saturday morning, the Turkish government announced.

Same link.

Al Jazeera says 23 dead.

These despicable attacks must stop.

10. Yes...
From the Al Jazeera link in post #8:

A Turkish group called the Great Eastern Islamic Raiders Front (IBDA-C) has claimed responsibility for the bombings.

The group wants to overthrow the secular Turkish government and replace it with an Islamist administration.

...

But Gorvett says that the Turkish police are not convinced that the IBA-C are responsible for the attacks.

''The security department in Istanbul has told me it doesn't believe the IBDA is responsible for the bombings. It is pointing the finger of blame at al-Qaida. The simultaneous bombings of targets is a classic al-Qaida tactic.''

11. read a bit about them a couple weeks ago
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 10:33 AM by Aidoneus
a decentralized organization, the official head of it writes books (prolific writer, it seems, dedicated mostly towards overthrowing the government and replacing it with probably himself), and those who read his works form their own independent branches. When those other branches carry out something, the official org claims it was provacateurs not directly tied to them or somesuch evasive bullshit like that.

There was supposedly some sort of general warning.

The photo shows a narrow street which is just devastated---

This is a truly horrible incident.

I guess our great adventure in Iraq really IS making the region safer!!
