A Sudanese migrant worker who entered Israel illegally was deported to the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, as Israel continues implementing two controversial military orders largely aimed at deporting Palestinians from the West Bank into the coastal enclave.
Mike Joel, 36, left his wife and daughter in Sudan seven years ago to work in Egypt, and was smuggled in by human traffickers. After six years, he was smuggled into Israel, where he spent a year working in a luxury Eilat hotel in southern Israel receiving a high salary. He speaks neither Arabic nor English.
On Wednesday evening, Israeli authorities detained him and deported him to Gaza, where he is being hosted by the Wa'ed Association for Detainees and Ex-Detainees.
One Wa'ed official said they received Joel at the northern Erez crossing, where he was left, and are in contact with the International Red Cross to assist them with his case. "He demanded that he either be deported to his homeland, or to Turkey, where he might find work."
One Palestinian lawyer explained that deportations are either to the country of citizenship or to the country from which the deportee entered. "In Joel's case, it should be Sudan or Egypt. The fact that he was deported to Gaza is a clear case of illegal imprisonment."http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=290783
