In a Democracy Now! exclusive, we bring you a sneak preview of previously unseen raw footage from the Mavi Marmara that will be formally released at a press conference at the United Nations later in the day. The footage shows the mood and the activities onboard the Mavi Marmara in the time leading up to the attack, and the immediate reaction of the passengers during the attack. We are joined by filmmaker and activist Iara Lee, one of the few Americans on the Mavi Marmara ship. Her equipment was confiscated, but she managed to smuggle out an hour’s worth of footage.

Isreal should immediately release all confiscated video and photos. To do otherwise is an admission of guilt. Since they're doing otherwise....

Ann Wright told Laura that when the group of passengers protecting the helm and the media center engaged the Israeli soldiers with deck chairs and pieces of deck railing, the IHH official and the captain came out and told them to stop.

If the IDF releases that, their smear of IHH goes out the window. They'll never do it.

Part of the video got pics of the boats approaching the ship. It skipped from that to other shots of the chopper/s overhead. Then to the aid station. At no time did any footage show the actual boarding of the ship.

There is no footage at all of the 'battle' that supposedly took place on the bridge or in the media room. With 'hundreds' of people on the ship, there is no footage of where all these people were. This is supposedly raw footage, but there were inserts that were included(Obama among others)and repeated scenes toward the end. In other words, not 'raw' footage.

Like everyone else, wish we had all the footage to watch intact, both sides in fact. Not much value in this surviving small segment.

I guess it boils down to this: A ship carrying humanitarian aid, the stated purpose of which was to 'break' the blockade, refused to go to the designated port for inspection. To be fair, the Israelis had the right, under San Remo, to stop the ship outside the blockade and take control of the vessel. During boarding operations, something happened...by one side or by both. Flash Bangs were used. Paintball guns were used. Some live ammo was finally used--we've seen nothing to date(I haven't anyway)that shows the reason for the use of live ammo. This has been called murder. It has been called a massacre, which it certainly was not--at least not on a ship carrying hundreds of people.

The boarding force was a commando unit, highly disciplined and trained, who had the capability to kill most of the people on the ship but did not do so. Restraint was used. Does anyone KNOW what caused the friction that caused the use of live fire?

So, I guess we all wait until this gets sorted out.

Israel did not confiscate the aid bound for Gaza, they confiscated the weapons and materials that may be used to make weapons, but nothing else. In contrast to this is Hamas who refused to let any of the aid into Gaza after Israel transported it from the Port of Ashdod to Gaza.

Since this isn't a Hollywood movie, the film maker could not step off of the vessel and hover above the water to show a long shot of where all those activists were on the three decks. But if you have been following this story at all, you run across images that other people recorded as well, particularly injured people being moved.

Of course it is raw footage. There are no edits in it.

Democracy Now! has interviewed some of the reporters, filmmakers, and photographers who managed to smuggle out some of their images.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s Paul McGeough and Kate Geraghty Were on the Challenger I–another one of the ships that was in the Freedom Flotilla along with the Mavi Marmara. Photographer Kate Geraghty took hundreds of photographs, most of which were confiscated by the IDF.

then we wouldn't have to rely on witness statements, we can see for ourselves what happened. So take your bullshit elsewhere unless you want to explain why Israel is tampering with evidance.

Which is why I haven't bothered to listen to one word of Israel's official story. I pay attention to the witness statements on the Palestinian side. Which you seem to be deliberately ignoring.

Because, if you were paying attention, you'd notice big fat flaming discrepancies. Or you would at least attempt to construct a timeline independent of Israel's. and confiscated tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and all the media it contained on all six vessels AND then proceeded to pirate that media for their own purposes. While they held those journalists and witnesses for days while their own official story got almost exclusive play.

It's one of the worst abuses of power I've ever seen. Rumsfeld must be envious.

Yes, there were many hours on that ship, but not so many hours in which the Israeli commandos attacked. That pretty much narrows down the timeframe, doncha think?

And I would imagine that the footage in the camera at the time of the event, and thus on hand, would be the easiest to hide. No?

during the early part of the attack. Remember, the reporter ends his report by saying that the organizers have asked everyone to go inside and sit down? You can hear an announcement to go in and sit down on this video. The reporter was live on the air so if you want to do a timeline, that would be the point of comparison.

So, what are you claiming. 60 seconds released by the IDF from the operation proves israel in the right, but one hour released by the flotilla is bullshit?

I have been trying to track down a doctor that attended the downed Israelis and who was injured or killed, without much success. There was more than one doctor on board the Mavi Marmara. A Turkish doctor was identified today in Amy's report. But the one I'm looking for is either Indonesian or Malaysian and no one has returned any of my inquiries about him yet.

Despite the Israeli government’s efforts to confiscate all of the footage taken during the attack, filmmaker Iara Lee was able to smuggle one hour of footage back to the United States and is releasing it raw to the public Thursday.

A day earlier at the United Nations, Lee presented the footage for the first time to the press.

We started filming from the moment we boarded the Mavi Marmara right through the Israeli assault on the ship. Although all of our equipment was confiscated, we managed to smuggle this footage out,” Lee said Thursday at the UN in New York.

“Mine is high-definition footage of the Flotilla attack and also the only sustained footage of the ship and its passengers preceding the deadly Israeli commando raid. Watching this raw, unedited footage, you will get a sense of the mood on the ship and of the passengers on it. … “ Etc.
