Irish Nobel laureate faces top Israeli court
JERUSALEM — Irish Nobel laureate and peace activist Mairead Maguire was on Monday appealing to the Israeli Supreme Court to cancel a deportation order barring her from Israel for 10 years, legal sources said.

Maguire was to appear before three Supreme Court justices in a bid to overturn a court decision handed down on Friday which ordered her deportation within 48 hours.

"This is the last stage -- if she loses this appeal, she will be deported," said Salah Mohsen, spokesman for the Adalah legal rights group which is representing her.

The 66-year-old activist arrived in Israel on Tuesday but was denied entry at Ben Gurion airport because she had been deported in June for trying to reach the Gaza Strip by boat in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade.

Adalah lawyers won a temporary injunction against her deportation and took the case to the district court in Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv on Friday, but the court rejected the appeal.

Later that night, Maguire, who has been held in detention at the airport since Tuesday, was taken to hospital for tests after falling ill, Mohsen told AFP.

"She was suffering from dizziness and dehydration so she was taken to hospital for tests," he said. She returned to the detention centre later that night. "She is still very tired but in good spirits," he said.

1. hopefully the judge will allow her to stay
however

Before she was deported, Corrigan-Maguire signed a document stating that she was prohibited from entering Israel for the next 10 years. Corrigan-Maguire, however, says she was misled and had not agreed to such a condition.

2. That'd be the document mentioned in the fact-finding mission's report...
216. On arrival in Ashdod, attempts were made to get passengers to sign certain
documents which passengers understood to be a confession of illegal entry into Israel. The
passengers almost universally refused to sign these documents based on the logic that since
they had been brought to Israel against their will, they could not themselves be held to have
illegally entered the country. They objected to the implication that they, as victims of an
illegal act by the State of Israel, could then be held guilty of the illegal act of entering
Israel. The Mission shared this objection and is of the view that the continued detention of
the passengers at Ashdod, Beersheva and at the airport constituted a continuation of their
unlawful detention initiated by the soldiers on the vessels after the interception.

She appears to be an intelligent woman and it's impossible to believe that she would have signed something like that without being misled or coerced into it...

3. Theres something perverse about kidnapping people in international waters,
bringing them against their will to your country, then getting them to sign a document saying they're there illegally.

Good on Mairead, though. Shes done a lot for peace in my country. Its just a pity people like her are such a threat to the right wing hawks in israel.

4. There is no possible way that Israel needs to bar people like Mairead Corrigan
in the name of "security".

This was the woman who helped organize AGAINST violence in Northern Ireland. That fact, BY ITSELF, should prove she's not a freaking terrorist.

Mairead Corrigan is guilty of nothing but opposing the unjustified imposition of suffering.

5. I think it was because she was on the last flotilla
Pretty sure they have barred everyone who participated regardless of security concerns.

17. She's against the collective punishment of the people of Gaza
She does NOT "support Hamas".

You know perfectly well that the Siege never had any chance of bringing down Hamas, and that it punished hundreds of thousands of people who had nothing to do with that organization.

6. LAUREATE OF HATE
LAUREATE OF HATE

By Ben-Dror Yemini
Ma'ariv
October 4, 2010

We must not mistake her: The Nobel peace prize laureate is no “peace activist.” She identifies in absolute terms with Hamas, despite the fact that she knows that it is an anti-Semitic organization that has insisted on continued violence, openly preaches for the annihilation of the Jews and supports global jihad and the Islamic conquest of the entire free world.

I am merely worried about the children of Gaza, said Nobel peace prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire in court, and we almost wanted to send her flowers. Worry about the fate of children, as such, is important. But Maguire couldn’t resist the temptation and said: I swore to myself during a visit to the concentration camps that I would never be silent in the face of suffering children.

The penny dropped. There are millions of children in Asia and Africa who are crying for help. They are being murdered. They are being pressed into military service against their will. They are being used as slaves. Maguire takes no interest in them. She has not demonstrated on their behalf and she has not acted on their behalf. She has just one thing that she is interested in doing: Comparing Israel to the Nazis. This wasn’t the first time that she has given voice to this despicable comparison.

Palestinian children were hurt. That is regrettable and tragic. But one really ought to be accurate with the facts. Children were turned into weapons by Hamas. Hamas has brainwashed them. Hamas has taught them to murder and to hate – not only to hate Jews, but to hate the free world. Hamas has educated them to be martyrs and suicide bombers. Hamas has admitted to using them as human shields.

10. I usually don't post op-eds, whather I agree with them or not. Everyone has an opinion after all.

Making an argument based on finding somebody who happens to agree with you is beyond ridiculous. Especially when they're a conservative and you're on a liberal site.

But thats just me.

I'd consider that contributing more than 'snarky sound bites'.

15. What would be the legal basis for revoking the deportation order?
The article does not address the main issue the Court would have to decide.
