Four Palestinian family members have died in Gaza, doctors say, in an apparent Israeli artillery strike.

Locals said four Israeli tank shells hit a home east of Gaza City; doctors said two children were killed.

The Israeli military said in a statement: "Regrettably non-combatants were hurt, this is because Hamas attacks from civilian areas."

Palestinian militants on Saturday fired a barrage of rockets over the frontier, prompting Israeli retaliation.

So where do DU members stand on the IDF (or the US, UK Army) returning fire in this manner?

I understand that the IDF has radar which pin-points the location of a fired mortar within seconds and instigates "automatic" return fire....Obviosly if militants fire from beside a civilian house the return fire will be on that house.

Is such "automatic" return fire acceptable without checking whether civilians are present?

Would any army return fire automatically if there was a danger that its own nationals might be in the house?.....If not, isn't this a case of racism?

ie "automatic" return-fire on Palestinian civilian houses is acceptable simply because they are not Israelis?


What alternatives are there?
