Last infiltrators return to Syria after day of bloody clashes on northern borders
IDF sources say Lebanese demonstrators were killed by gunfire from the Lebanese army during Nakba Day protests on the border; Syria foreign ministry condemns Israel.
By Anshel Pfeffer and Reuters

...............snip........................

According to the IDF sources, IDF soldiers fired shots in the air and at the legs of protesters while Lebanese forces opened fire indiscriminately.

The IDF sources said that three to five demonstrators were killed by Lebanese gunfire.

The protests were held to mark Nakba Day, which mourns the creation of the State of Israel.

Syria condemned Israel's "criminal activities" on Sunday.

State news agency SANA quoted the Syrian foreign ministry as saying it called on the international community to hold Israel responsible for the incidents, the deadliest such confrontation along the borders in years.

And that you believe anything put forth by the IDF.

6. from the article possibly after it was updated
The Lebanese army said that 10 people were killed and 112 were wounded in Maroun a-Ras when IDF troops opened fire on demonstrators trying to cross the border.

The Lebanese army said it was in a state of maximum alert and had coordinated with UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon "to prevent the enemy from continuing its targeting of the masses and its violation of Lebanese sovereignty".

IDF sources said, however, that both IDF and Lebanese forces opened fire to prevent to prevent demonstrators from crossing the border.

17. Huh.
So you see the widespread reports of Syrian police using lethal force to oppress scores of largely peaceful protesters as being "IDF bullshit?" Does that mean you disbelieve it or see it as Israeli propaganda or what?

And what does it have to do with racism in the Israeli government? Do you think that racism was the primary cause of the incident we're discussing?

Earlier you referred to this as "the senseless slaughter of innocents." I'm not sure I would describe a large violent mob of young men armed with stones and petrol bombs who were attempting to breach the sovereign border of an enemy state as "innocents." Nor would I lament the fact that several died during their foolhardy attack as "senseless." In fact, the deaths seem to be the most sensible thing that occurred so far that day, which up until then seemed to be a collection of some of the most outrageously retarded series of ideas anyone ever thought to link together. The actions of the protesters might qualify as some of the most spectacular examples of senselessness ever, EVER, being completely devoid of any and all sense whatsoever. What they did, it was the opposite of sense. It was the antipode of sense. It was not just merely the absence of sense... it was anti-sense.

What do YOU think a more "sensible" outcome might have been?

32. Because Zionism=Racism
Problem?
Yeah.

Here is a Resolution from the U.N. that Israel did not ignore:

"United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3379, adopted on November 10, 1975 by a vote of 72 to 35 (with 32 abstentions), "determine that Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination". The resolution was revoked by Resolution 46/86 on December 16, 1991. In the history of the UN, this is the only resolution that has ever been revoked."

But ya know what? You are so stuck in the goo of religion and exceptionalism you will never get it.
So there is no point in conversing with you.

41. That Israel is nothing more than
a Nation that gets away with murder daily.
But we both know that DU has a large percentage
of Israel defenders, especially those who post only in this forum.
The facts are the facts, Israel does not want peace.

As a Native here, I am all too familiar with what those who
want more land will do.
Zionism is racism, simple.

And those who live here, are US citizens yet put Israel above
their duties to this country suck.

I long for the day when I hear and read nothing about Israel and Palestine, that the two state solution is working and peace reigns.
Exactly what Israel does not want.

Edited on Wed May-18-11 09:02 AM by shira
All nations voting Zionism = Racism were either extremely lunatic far rightwing or totalitarian insane left.

All were and still remain serial obliteraters of human rights, all being fascist rogue regimes.

The votes of ridiculously inhumane and racist/bigoted serial abusers of human rights like Saudi Arabia, Libya, and N.Korea mean nothing and say more about the utter depravity of the UN than anything else.

====

I suspect you've never once condemned the UN for having Libya or Syria on its Human Rights Council, but for some reason you believe you should be taken seriously when it comes to criticizing Israel.

If Algeria introduced a resolution declaring that the earth was flat and that Israel had flattened it, it would pass by a vote of 164 to 13 with 26 abstentions.

3. (Israeli) Foreign Ministry gears for PR campaign following violent events of 'Nakba Day'
Published: 05.15.11, 21:13 / Israel News

Israeli embassies worldwide received a memorandum from the Foreign Ministry Sunday evening, detailing Israel's planed PR approach to the violent events on the Syrian border.

The memorandum asked all Israeli officials stationed abroad to emphasize in interviews with the foreign media that since the Syrian military is in control of the northern border crossings, the protesters who rushed the border would not have been able to approach the border – let alone infiltrated the village of Majdal Shams – without the Syrian military's knowledge and consent.

Defense Minister: IDF protected Israel's sovereignty

Published 22:17 15.05.11
Latest update 22:17 15.05.11

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Sunday that Israel Defense Forces soldiers succeeded in defending Israel's sovereignty when Palestinian refugee demonstrators breached the order with Syria and attempted to cross the border with Lebanon.

Barak cautioned, however, that Israel will in the future have to deal with similar and perhaps more complex incidents.

The IDF and the Lebanese army have presented different versions of the incident in the Lebanese village of Maroun a-Ras. The IDF said that gunfire from Lebanese army soldiers killed a number of demonstrators while the Lebanese army claimed that IDF soldiers killed 10 demonstrators.

<snip>

Barak said that IDF soldiers acted with restraint and discretion and only opened fire at the legs of protesters when other crowd dispersal methods proved insufficient.

23. Israel still searching for Golan returnees
The news that searches continued for those who had entered the area, which came under Israeli control during the war of 1967, came following reports in the Israeli press saying all had been forcibly returned by Israel's military.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said hundreds of police had been working through the night in the Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams to seek out any protesters who had not returned to Syria.

"Throughout the night, police have been searching house-to-house for suspects who could still be in Majdal Shams," he told AFP, saying police had set up roadblocks throughout this Druze town, which has a population of 9,700 and lies close to the Syrian border.
