UN's Annan announces "solidarity" with Palestinians
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/afp/20031201/wl_mideast_afp/mideast_palestinian_un&e=4

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) delivered a message of support to the Palestinians, saying he felt the "deepest solidarity" with their "continued suffering."

Just days after issuing a report denouncing the controversial security barrier Israel is building that cuts into the West Bank, Annan said Israeli actions have undercut hopes for peace in the Middle East.

"They have undermined efforts to curb violence and fuelled hatred and anger towards Israel. They have pushed back the day when Israel will live without fear within secure and recognised borders," he said in a statement.

"I wish to join with those from around the world who today express the deepest solidarity with the Palestinian people in their continued suffering. They remain stateless and oppressed."

3. Good find, Don!
Annan is a great statesman; a thinking man with a compassionate heart.
He is in every way the anti-Bush.

4. Do you mean to suggest that Annan is a quisling, drdon?
From the article you cite:

Annan took pains to say that his remarks did not mean to "ignore the suffering of the people of Israel" and said there was "no justification" for Palestinian attacks on Israelis.

"The terrible events of the past three years, and the dire situation on the ground today, should be proof to all that the more each side harms the other, the more it wounds itself," he said.

In a report to the UN General Assembly on Friday, Annan acknowledged Israel's "right and duty" to protect its citizens but added: "That duty should not be carried out in a way that is in contradiction to international law."

Annan also praised an alternative peace plan put together by Israeli opposition politicians and prominent Palestinians that was launched to great fanfare in Geneva earlier Monday.

I don't see anything "wrong" with expressing solidarity and compassion for a people who are occupied. In fact, that is the nature of people who are forward thinking in their desire to see that peace is obtained. Had Annan stated that the Palestinians were blameless in this conflict, your comment would hold more weight, however, I see him carrying a more balanced approach.

7. It would seem the intent would be to portray Annan in a bad light.
However, it is the responsibility of the poster to read the entire article. I guess where I had my point of contention was with regard to the comment drdon made as if only to establish a perception from the snipped piece alone. That isn't very fair in my opinion.

6. I can feel another report due fairly soon
about the rampant anti-Semiticism in the UN.

In honour of the recent EU report I've added a 'very', doen't scan as well but then nothing I ever write does.

"legin the very anti-Semitic, cultural imperialist, ex-stalinist, report-burying, garbage-loving, cockroach".

8. Kofi speaks of empathy and humanity....
He must be an anti-semite.

Just like Jimmy Carter.

Or so SOME would have us believe.

9. I have no idea what the man is except
a puppet of the Arab states. To bad he doesn't put some effort into slavery in Somalia, the Sudan, and in Ethiopia. But then, those aren't high profile (newsie) issues; just humanitarian.

10. Then why don't you learn about him?
Because Annan isn't 'a puppet of the Arab states' at all. If he was a puppet, can you explain why he's spoken out against suicide-bombings?

14. No, it wasn't...
Point out where in that post rini explained that she'd bothered to learn about Kofi Annan. Or am I lying when I point out that he's condemned suicide bombings?

15. I was replying
about his most elequent silence regarding horrendous happening in Africa......I see no humanity, compassion, or caring in the man. Other than that I do know a few things about him which are totally irrelevant.

17. No,
which is certainly understandable and definitely a good thing.

However, while he has indeed criticized suicide bombings in Iraq, his silence about Israelis being blown to bits is a somewhat hurtful to some of us.
