Hamas wins student election race on Israeli bodycount ticket
At Beir Zeit University's student election, which focused on which party had killed the most Israelis, Hamas swept to victory Wednesday, defeating Yasser Arafat's Fatah.

The campaign at the campus near Ramallah featured exploding models of Israeli buses and claims of prowess based on Israeli casualties.

The campaign was so focused on violent activities that officials at the university - considered the most liberal of the Palestinian higher education institutions - were nervous.

"We were worried ... the atmosphere seems very dangerous," said Ludna Abdel Hadi, a university spokeswoman.

She said the student elections have wider significance. "The Bir Zeit elections are like a barometer to measure the political mood on the Palestinian street."

What did some posters say about the "average" Palestinian? But then the "average" Palestinian isn't an educated college student so I guess this doesn't mean anything. So who did raise these kids with so much hate? It wasn't Bert and Ernie.

1. I guess they were born with hatred
and Israel's policy have nothing to do with such support, right?

you think there is nothing wrong with the article you read?

You did read it of course. But then I have been wrong before.

4. It's a NEWS STORY
Not an EDITORIAL.

6. Coming from a TOTALLY UNBIASED source like JP
Sorry, but this "news" story has opinion written all over it, with phrases like "The display was meant to emphasize" and the elections "focused on which party had killed the most Israelis".

What do they do at Hebrew University of Jerusalem--build little model fences and bulldozers?

9. You are perhaps being a bit disingenuous?
You know this article is slanted (actually a bit silly)
in perspective. And evenso, you know that the IDF imposes
mandatory education 24/7 on all Palestinian men, women
and children. The lesson is as unavoidable as it is monstrous.

However, if your intention is to propagandize the uninitiated,
you may meet with some success.

10. Try al Jazeera
It might have the same story with a more "neutral" slant. It might go over better, anyway, as it would call the students "heros".

to know that they won't read anything that disputes their beliefs.

Posting anything on this forum is futile. It falls on cold hearts and closed minds. Perhaps everyone who cares for Israel should simply post on all the other good forums at DU!

We know how we feel and we also know that 80% of Jews vote democratic.

It's getting just silly to see the non-reply replies that pass for discourse here!

23. As though
every Israeli or Jew shares your beliefs. You can care about Israel without supporting just about anything done by some RW generals with a very bloody past...

28. That misses the point, surprisingly,
you see, the frustration isn't over any disagreements.

The problem is that no one who advocates for the other side will in fact debate the issues.

They will dispute the sources, divert the topic, and write, "But it's not like the 'fill in the evil Israeli entity' doesn't do that" or simply toss out the substance because it might humanize the opposing side.

So, I'm not saying anyone shares my beliefs. I'm saying it's quite impossible to debate with people who are unwilling to do so in good faith, ie staying on topic, addressing the issues at hand and so on.

It makes a fraud of the I/P forum and buttresses the arguments of those who tell me they just won't bother with coming here...not because they're afraid of you, they just can't be bothered with the tactics here.

13. Haaretz has this story too.
In much the same terms.
Quite depressing.
Is this what Sharon was elected to produce?
Is this security for Israel?
Where does the buck stop for this sort of policy failure?
Does anyone think that this can be blamed on Arafat, and that
blaming it on Arafat will change anything at all?

Here is another one from today:

Security veterans' report predicts warlords after Arafat goes

Leading security veterans predict in a report to
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that Palestinian
warlords will take control in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip in a post-Yasser Arafat era,
officials said on Thursday.

Former heads of security services, including
the Mossad intelligence agency, who drew up
the report for Sharon believe there is no chance
of reaching a peace deal while the Palestinian
Authority chairman is alive or for many years
after he leaves the stage.

16. It isn't. It's a different one.
If you want to read the Haaretz version of the
same story, it's easy to find, and as stated,
it reads much the same.

Seeing as how I DIDN'T blame Arafat for that story, why did you feel it necessary to blame Sharon for it?

27. It's not about blaming current failure on either side of the issue.
These kids were born and brought up before Sharon was PM. We are talking about an area of the world where kids are inately brought up to hate Jews and Israelis.

To point to a "fence", a "bulldozer", "Rachel Corrie" or a bad falafel sandwich is to both ignore and rewrite history. To have a civil discussion here (and I assume as much of this blame also) is to be able to wade through the bullshit piled high and wide.

Such as, but not limited to:

This on a progressive forum?
Oh, my
This ain't nothing but shit
Why didn't you answer my question?
How can you say that and have MLK as your avatar?
etc. etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum
Oh my (repeated because it has become a bigger standard than Bing Crosby's "White Christmas")
