NY Times: Chain of Events in the Middle East Conflict - A Chronology
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 07:42 AM by La_Serpiente
For those of you who are interested in what has been happening in the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict, the NY Times presents a "satisfactory" timeline of what has been occuring.

Here are some things that have happened:

-2400 Palestinians have been killed since Sept. of 2000.

-800 Israelis have been killed since Sept. of 2000.

For better perspectives of the events, click on the link.

On Edit: The timeline only goes up until August. If anyone has any extra information that they would be willing to tag on, feel free to do so.

1. Figures are as of Aug 21, 2003
Therefore, there is a considerable difference today.

The "chronology" also should include events surrounding the opening of the Intifada. Instead it claims that the Intifada erupted as a result of Ariel Sharon's Temple Mount excursion. In fact, the clashes were already underway prior to that event.

Important to note, however, the date of the IDF reoccupation:

MARCH 29, 2002: After a month in which 136 Israelis are killed in Palestinian attacks, mostly suicide bombings, Israel begins an operation to rout Palestinian militant groups, reoccupying Palestinian towns in the West Bank.

3. N.Y. Times is, frankly, unreliable here
The Intifada begun when Sharon's troops started firing into crowds of unarmed protestors, killing several for the first couple of days before any shot was fired by a Palestinian. The NYT summarizes this as "clashes erupt".

Also note in June 2002, Israel had been busily continuing it's aggression with murders, home-demolitions, and ongoing land theft, yet the NYT calls this "a brief lull"

Note how they describe the June 10, 2003 Israeli missile strikes in Gaza: there is no mention of civilians killed by the IDF. Yet on June 17, 2003 we have a Hamas suicide attack with the NYT quick to point out "killing 17 people".

The NYT is pretty pathetic. You'd think they could give their readers the truth (or at least make an attempt to give an accurate portrayal), but I guess that's too much to ask of one of the most widely read newspapers in the world.
