Debate Over Israel's Barrier Heats Up
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031228/ap_on_re_mi_ea/israel_palestinians_031210190251

<snip>

"The army's shooting of an American and an Israeli peace protester has angered Israelis and sparked renewed debate over a controversial West Bank barrier and the army's rules of engagement.

Israel says the barrier — made up of concrete walls, razor wire, fences and trenches — is meant to keep suicide bombers out. Palestinians condemn the barrier, which dips deep into the West Bank in some areas, as a land grab."

<snip>

"Although Israeli soldiers often fire at Palestinian demonstrators — with both rubber-coated metal bullets and live ammunition — the incident Friday appeared to be the first time Israeli troops have fired at a Jewish-Israeli protester.

Hours after the incident, the army set up an investigative committee. The army chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Moshe Yaalon, took the rare step of visiting the injured Israeli, Gil Naamati, in the hospital Saturday. Yaalon called the shooting serious and pledged to investigate thoroughly."

1. shooting peace activists
sparks debate over the Apartheid Wall?

How about just not murdering, harming, and shooting peace activists period?

2. The weren't DEBATING the fence, they were DESTROYING it.
Israeli soldiers fired Friday at a group of peace protesters who tried to cut through a fenced portion of the barrier, moderately wounding an Israeli demonstrator in his legs and lightly injuring an American protester.

So fuck 'em.

Lets try this on for size -

"Florida cops shot at a group of peace protestors who cut through the WTO barriers.

So fuck 'em."

Nice.

4. I guess for your analogy to make some sense
There would have to be an ongoing history of WTO protesters who have strapped homemade bellybombs on their persons and blown themselves up on crowded public buses or pizza parlors.

I guess they just haven't made the papers yet.

6. Nope...
That doesn't work. Not unless yr trying to claim that the peace protesters fired on are actually suicide bombers. Which is why mmm's analogy did make sense...

Violet...

8. That you DON'T shoot
at people not harming or endangering you in any way, especially not peace activists that are not even armed! That's how a progressive society thinks at least. But if you support shooting at anyone you disagree with that protests and demonstrates against your policy, well then, I am sorry for you...

9. Feel sorry for the IDF joe, who will never ever know...
when one of these "dissenters" will detonate himself.

He's just an IDF man, doin' the best he can...to make the world a safer place.

10. How manny dissenters have detonated themselves?
Edited on Tue Dec-30-03 10:09 AM by bluesoul
How many of them were peace activists? You can't be serious. You advocate pre-emptive killings, Minority Report style. This is really sad...

11. Minority Report style would be like the cops going out in the neighborhood
and rounding up "potential" criminals. What ACTUALLY happened is more like cops shooting a mob that was trying to break into the local police station. Your analogy doesn't just break down, it dissolves into helpless laughter.

12. A remarkable ability you have
You know how protestors dress and how people who detonate themself dress. Especially when they place themselves in areas they have no business being in. Maybe if you shared this insight with the IDF there would be no need for building the PEACE FENCE?

14. It has raised serious questions
The IDF has been ordered to investigate; the rules of engagement are being reviewed. Live ammo should not have been used in this case. Apparently the IDF unit on the scene was not equipped for crowd-control.

15. Ahm. Ongoing history?
The army's shooting of an *American* and an *Israeli* peace protester.

You're right. American and Israeli suicide bombers have not made the papers yet.
