Israel and Libya hold secret meetings
Irish Examiner

In signs of a potential thaw in relations between historic enemies, Libyan and Israeli officials have held at least two meetings in recent months, Israeli media reported today.

Once a pariah in the West, Gaddafi has worked to remake his image in recent years, toning down his anti-Israel rhetoric and trying to build a reputation as an African statesman.

Last month, he abruptly renounced efforts to build weapons of mass destruction and opened his country’s weapons production facilities to international inspection. That move was widely seen as linked to new pressures in the region following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

Peace treaties with its neighbours, Egypt and Jordan, and Saddam Hussein’s defeat have ended many of the international threats against Israel.

1. Not just Israel
If Libya DOES join the community of nations, that ends a threat for everyone.

2. I don't think there ever really was a threat
from Libya beyond small-scale terrorism (the kind so out of fashion today), and I'm far from convinced it had anything to do with Lockerbie.

Qadafi is a very shrewd political survivor and at no point do I see him risking his life to piss us off. He doesn't seem to emote through his policy positions.

3. As far as I am concerned
all these nations ought to surrender their weaponry of scale (which can never hold up to a U.S. massive aggression and merely serves to oppress the masses) and hand every citizen a Kalashnikov. With this type of guerilla war as in Iraq the U.S. would think twice of screwing a country out of its rightful property (i.e. oil).
