Israelis shoot deaf Palestinian woman
Israelis shoot deaf Palestinian woman
Monday 19 January 2004

Israeli occupation troops have shot and wounded a "mentally disturbed" woman as she worked on her family's farm in the town of Musha, near Qalqilya in the West Bank.

According to our correspondent, the troops opened fire on the woman, wounding her in the shoulder. The woman, who is deaf, was carrying farm implements at the time.

An Israeli newspaper said the troops said they mistook her for a "suicide bomber". The paper reported the woman was "apparently mentally disturbed".

2. who cares, right? she was mentally disturbed and deaf
... and obviously a drag on the productive members of society, yadda yadda yadda. what the hell was she doing out in public on her family's farm anyway? she should have been locked in a closet where she wouldn't pose a danger to innocent well-intentioned and pure-hearted occupation soldiers.

4. Wounded
Al Jazeera again. The woman was wounded in the legs because she did not stop when she approached the soldiers, but continued walking towards them. They didn't know that she was deaf.

7. The events
The event at the Erez crossing last Friday gives all the excuse they would need. At least she still has her life.

10. Could you please...
...elaborate on how the events of last Friday relate to this shooting. I do not see the connection. Thank you.

12. Then maybe just
Imagine that you were in a crowded market and you were pretty sure that several terrorists were winding their ways through the crowd. Your job is to find them and stop them from exploding themselves and killing people.

6. What is wrong with the headline?

Israelis shoot deaf Palestinian woman

If it said Israelis shoot Palestinian woman dead I would agree that there is a problem.

However, some Israeli soldiers on patrol shot a Palestinian woman. The woman happened to be deaf. It is accurate.

8. Sorry?
I didn't say the headline was wrong. The fact that she was deaf, by the way, unknown to them, caused them to suspect that she may be a terrorist. She was wounded in the legs. That detail was not supplied. Shooting at the feet is more acceptable in this situation.

9. From the story . . .
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 04:26 PM by Jack Rabbit
. . . I would assume that they did not know she was deaf. There was no reason given in the story to cause one to assume that they knew this woman from any other. There was no reason to make that explicit.

11. Right, no way to know
So because they assumed that she could hear them ordering her to halt, they could also assume that she had some reason for not wanting to halt. Like she might be strapped with a bomb.

13. Ms. Gimel, I got all that from reading the story
Which brings me back to the question: What is your problem?

Unlike some people here, I do not assume the IDF troops are a bunch of thugs by nature. They are in a difficult situation not of their making. I blame so-called leaders for that situation, not foot soldiers.

Yes, they make mistakes. Sometimes innocent people are killed by mistake. As long as there is a conflict, those mistakes will continue.

That is one of many reasons why these so-called leaders on both sides should work harder to end the conflict, or at least act like they're even interested in ending it.

15. "My" problem
I can only surmise that you mean in the context of this discussion about the al Jazeera report. What is my problem? Well, it is the way that al Jazeera highlights this story and leaves out specific details, like the threat to the soldiers that she presented, the nature or her injury is not mentioned (it may have been very light) and so it is out of proportion to reality.

Also, the item about the arrest of a terrorist operative is put at the very end of the page. This organizing of events to make the IDF appear unreasonably attacking the innocent is all in the expertise of the propagandist. It is mind control by the media. Many fall into that trap.

To return the favor, what is your problem?

16. Mind control by the media
is reporting a "lull in violence" during a period in which 117 Palestinians were killed, mostly civilians, and many children - something which many Western elite news outlets did. Reporting the facts on Israeli soldiers shooting a deaf woman isn't mind control.

19. What was my problem with the article?
I had no problem with it.

In four paragraphs, I got enough information to draw the same conclusions you did. Why do you think more information was needed?

21. Do you think that the pro-Israeli side doesn't use mind control?
Believe me, they do. They'll concentrate completely on suicide bombings, while showing little to nothing on the occupation. They'll call suicide bombings as "homocide bombings". I'll agree that it's homocide, but we don't call other bombings "homocide" bombings, do we? No, the "pro-Israeli" side uses that term to diverte attention off of the fact that these bombings are done by people desperate enough to commit suicide to commit homocide. They pretend that just about everybody that IDF kills is a terrorist or a potential one.

I understand that soldiers make mistakes, but this wouldn't be happening to begin with if the occupation would end. You can't pretend that the Israel is the victim here. They shouldn't be there in the first place. That deaf woman shouldn't need any Israeli's permission to walk where she wants to.

New message: Don't walk towards Israelis if you're deaf. You might end up shot.

20. So....
IDFers can just shoot deaf people because they're too ignorant to consider the idea that not every Palestinian who is coming towards them is a terrorist? Heck, get out of the territories, and they won't have to worry about it.

17. In fairness to the IDF soldiers
The GOI seems to have a habit lately of shipping soldiers out when the sum total of their training is firing one round of ammo1.

I personally would chalk this up as an accident (though ultimately preventable of course).

-----

1. For example, the case of recruits at the "Beit Lid" occupation base, near Tulkarem (north of Qalqiya), which caused a furor in Israel.
