Shinui leader Justice Minister Yosef Lapid will present his alternative plans for the security fence to the cabinet on Sunday.
Lapid has said, albeit behind closed doors, that his proposal is the only way to enlist the support of the Americans and the world, and to arrive at the International Court in The Hague with a real chance of victory. He refused to comment yesterday and it is not yet known if he has presented his new fence map to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

The Road Map acknowledges an Israeli presence in the territories, and offers a way to eliminate that presence. The purpose of the fence is to bypass the end to the terror – the first condition for applying the Road Map. For security reasons the fence cannot be invasive and must be built as close as possible to the Green Line.
After studying the map, Lapid is proposing that the original 700km be cut to about 500km. For that to happen, Israel will have to concede the whole of the Ariel salient, which is a Jewish island in a sea of Arab villlages. According to his proposal the fence will wind its way along a path much closer to the Green Line. He also proposes leaving three areas in the Jerusalem region outside the fence.
The new route will be more cost efficient both in terms of political as well as financial capital...
