Israeli Arab community observes day of mourning for Yassin
By Yair Ettinger, Haaretz Correspondent

The Higher Monitoring Committee for Arab Affairs in Israel has declared that the country's Arabs will observe Tuesday as a national day of mourning, in response to the assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

The committee's leadership decided Monday night at an emergency meeting to adopt the Islamic Movement's proposal, and stage a protest against the Sharon government Tuesday afternoon in Nazareth. The committee has also called on Arab citizens to wave black flags in protest.

The Sharon government is guilty of "terrorist crimes" against "one of the Palestinian people's most prominent political leaders in the occupied territories," said the Higher Monitoring Committee.

Members of Israel's Islamic Movement, as well as the Balad and Hadash parties, held protest rallies in Arab towns and villages Monday night.
