Fear grips Israeli capital
http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,,2-10-1462_1502118,00.html

<snip>

"Tel Aviv - "Are you crazy, getting on a bus, today of all days?"

For the residents of Israel's largest city, it seems only a matter of time before Palestinian militants carry out their threat to avenge the death of Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

Israeli police and security forces were deployed in force across the country on Tuesday in anticipation of a backlash to the air strike which killed Yassin and seven other Palestinians near a mosque in Gaza City on Monday.

Security was particularly tight around buses, which have been the target of dozens of suicide attacks since the start of the Palestinian intifada in September 2000.

One 21-year-old international relations student at Tel Aviv University said the very idea of travelling on a bus at this time was "the most crazy thing I've ever heard of".

4. Fear descends on Jerusalem
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,9056352%5E663,00.html

<snip>

"NORMALLY lively streets were virtually deserted as Jewish residents waited for Hamas to hit back.

At the central bus station, which tens of thousands of travellers use daily, shops and restaurants were empty.
Sheli Afriat, 22, a waitress, said: "It's very scary. Everyone knows that sooner or later something is going to happen. If not today, then tomorrow."

Panic broke out when an Israeli army flare landed by mistake on a car, blowing it up. No one was injured.

"I'm very afraid," said Gimel Gorkovoi, 47. "I was near a bus that blew up several months ago. But what can I do? I have no other way to travel."

7. The title of the article says "Fear grips Israeli capital"
The article is about Tel Aviv.

The capital of Israel is Jerusalem.

That should clear up any confusion.

9. Unless you know something that everyone else doesn't know
Or you are one of the negotiaters in a future (hopefully soon) negotiation, you are incorrect and all the wishing and hoping on your part will not make it so.

At this point you could also say if you choose to, Detroit is the capital city of Palestine.

18. claim made by Palestinians
not a matter of wishing and hoping on my part.
I doubt I'll be in the negotiations, not being a Jew, Muslim
Israeli or Palestinian. ;)

20. I would imagine
Should "real" discussions ever take place, the eventual outcome will be a portion of East Jerusalem will be designated as the Palestinian capital and the balance of Jerusalem will be Israel's capital. But Arafat has already turned that down so who is to say what will be. If he still has visions of a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan river to the Mediterranean sea, he will get no where fast.

The leadership of Hamas both past and present will not get their wishes either and they continue to screw the Palestinian people. I believe it was Abba Eban who said, "the Palestinian leadership never fails to miss an opportunity" or words to that effect. Hopefully new leaders will emerge when the fanatics eventually meet their destiny.
For the sake of the Palestinian people, I hope they don't run out of virgins anytime soon.

14. My atlas says Tel Aviv
Israel can claim Bagdad as its capital if it likes. Doesn't mean the rest of the world cares.

22. Tel Aviv
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 11:15 PM by Aussie_Hillbilly
This is my country's view:

"Foreign Affairs: Israel
(Question No. 2791)
Mrs Irwin asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 25 November 2003:

(1)In which city is the Australian Embassy in Israel located.
(2)Which city does the Australian Government recognise as the capital of Israel.
(3)What official recognition does the Australian Government give to Jerusalem.

Mr Downer —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows :

(1)Tel Aviv
(2)Australia does not have a view on which city is the capital of Israel. Australia does not, however, recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
(3)Australia recognises Israel's 4 June 1967 borders, including what is often referred to as West Jerusalem."
http://parlinfoweb.aph.gov.au/piweb/view_document.aspx?ID=855389&TABLE=HANSARDR

And now this is the USA's view expressed in the CIA World Factbook -

"Israel proclaimed Jerusalem as its capital in 1950, but the US, like nearly all other countries, maintains its Embassy in Tel Aviv "
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

So no, my atlas is admirably accurate regarding Israel's legal, internationally recognised borders and capital. And this from two countries with a shameful history of toadying to the Israeli Right. Maybe if Israel would start obeying some of those UN security council resolutions the status of Jerusalem could be clarified.
