Teenager promised sex with virgins if he blew himself up near soldiers
By Ellis Shuman -- Israel Insider
Thursday, March 25, 2004

----
"I wanted to get to the Garden of Eden, to have sex there with 72 virgins," said 14-year-old Hussam Abdu, who approached an army roadblock near Nablus yesterday with 8 kilograms (14 pounds) of explosives wrapped around his waist. Alert IDF Paratroopers suspected the teen bomber, and helped him cut off the belt. It was the second time in ten days that Nablus terrorists have sent a young boy on a bomb mission.
"They told me that this was the only way (to get to Heaven), and they promised that my mother would get one hundred shekels ($22) if I did this," Hussam told the soldiers after the belt was removed. Hussam said that after being bullied in school, he wanted "to be a hero."
(...)
Abdallah Quran was an unsuspecting bomb courier. The Tanzim terrorists who sent him planned to blow him up alongside the soldiers at the roadblock.
But unlike Abdallah, Hussam willingly planned to blow himself up. A student in the eighth grade in Nablus, Hussam said he was picked on by his classmates for being an "ugly dwarf. I was so hurt, I wanted to kill myself," he said, talking to Israeli newspaper reporters.
(...)
Following the soldiers' orders, Hussam removed the battery from his bomb, but apparently had difficulty removing the explosives belt by himself. The army sent a bomb-removal robot to hand scissors to the boy so that he could cut off the vest. He cut off part of it and struggled with the rest. "I don't know how to get this off," he said.
(...)
Hussam Abdu's volunteering to serve as a suicide bomber will change the perception that economic straits lead Palestinian youths to choose "martyrdom" operations as the only way out of their problems, Yediot Aharonot reported.
"We had no problems," Hussam said. "I had a computer, and I played computer games. I heard a lot of music on the Internet. I once wanted to work with electronics when I grew up. I wanted to open a television and radio repair shop in Nablus. Now they'll send me to jail for 25 years. I don't want to be in prison."
Hussam's family said that he was mentally retarded. "He doesn't know anything," his brother, Hosni, said. His mother said she was surprised. "Hussam left home this morning to school, and this was the first we hear of what happened," Tamam Abdu told Reuters. "This is shocking. To use a child like this is irresponsible, forbidden."

1. Amnesty International on the incident
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 06:01 PM by JohnLocke
Children must not be used by armed groups
----
Amnesty International is gravely concerned about reports that earlier today a 14-year-old Palestinian child was found to be carrying explosives when attempting to pass through the Israeli army checkpoint at Huwara, at the entrance of the West Bank town of Nablus.
Reports indicate that the boy was wearing an explosive belt, which would suggest that he was knowingly carrying it. According to Israeli army reports the boy may have intended to detonate the explosive belt, and thus commit suicide, near soldiers manning the checkpoint.
Last week, Israeli soldiers discovered a bag of explosives in the possession of an 11-year old Palestinian child at the same checkpoint. The boy, who regularly carried bags for travellers from one side of the checkpoint to the other, was reported not to have been aware that one of the bags on his cart contained explosives.
"Amnesty International has repeatedly condemned suicide bombings and other attacks against civilians by Palestinian armed groups as crimes against humanity. Using children to carry out or assist in armed attacks of any kind is an abomination. We call on the Palestinian leadership to publicly denounce these practices."
"Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs's brigades, must put an immediate end to the use or involvement of any kind of children in armed activity."

3. As an aside
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 06:06 PM by Muddleoftheroad
Personally speaking, I think all this promise of virgins is overrated. If someone was promising me such a thing, I think it wouldn't work as a marketing plan.

On edit: Post Two was done at the same time. Clearly, I am not alone in this thought.

8. sadly, when such is offered to less mature people
they are less likely to rationally consider it as "marketing" (which is, I believe, an accurate euphemism)

4. Interesting side note.

When I posted this on the "other" site, the thread was promptly locked and I was referred to a thread from Al-Jazeera, which reported that the PA 'information' minister and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades said it was all a big fabrication. Gee, I guess that settles it. :eyes:

Edit: Spelling.

11. maybe the 'other' site doesn't want disruptors -as DU does not

your post seems like an admission of such.

anywho, what does the 'other' site have to do with DU or this thread?

6. If we allowed prostitution in the Arab world would we put an end to
suicide bombers?

Hey, I'm not in favor of legalizing prostitution, but if it will alleviate the tension in the Middle East, I say, go for it.

7. There is already prostitution in the muslim world
Many Arab societies allow for temporary marriages, and men can sell their wives to others.
