can somebody explain to me what's so bad about sharon's pull out from gaza

For some reason people here on this site were up in arms about this plan - probably because Sharon and Bush endorsed it and for no better reason.

I think a pull out of Gaza - we can all agree - is a step in the right direction - whether the step is suggested by Sharon or someone we all like more is really immaterial.


But I tell you for the life of me I cannot figure out why the Palestinain leadership is lamenting this pullout plan - why are they screaming their heads off because Israel wants to pull out of Gaza?

Why are liberal Americans argueing against this plan - its stupid. Personally I think unilateral disengagement sounds like a great idea at this point.

This has nothing to do with Israel destroying homes and shooting protesters - that's a completely different topic. I just wanted to know why do palestinians and some liberals argue agains Sharon's pull out of Gaza? Isn't that a great solution? Israelis leave Gaza for Palestinians to do whatever the hell they want to do with it, Israel builds a wall around its country...

I haven't spoken out against this. But here's my opinion:

If Sharon is going to withdraw unilaterally, nothing's stopping him from doing so. If he insists on conditions for the withdrawal, then it's not really unilateral, is it?

The problem is, at this point, Israel, and especially Sharon, have zero credibility. No one will actually believe they are going to withdraw until they actually do so, and STAY withdrawn.

There are times I've had utmost respect for Israel. Holding back during Gulf War I when Saddam was launching SCUDs at them, for example, was a tremendously wise move. However, under Sharon, Israel has met every Arabs worst predictions. They've spent their political capital, and as good as the IDF is, guns only take you so far when surrounded by enemies.
